Quoting Timmaigh, reply 29It is subjective, but at the same time you would be lying to yourself if you thought every opinion is equal, and this includes even such matter as aesthetical preference. I mean, surely Jonathan Ive or whatever is that main Apple designer called is not in that position he is and earns the kind of money he earns, cause his subjective opinion on what is aesthetically pleasing and therefore how Apple products should look like is the same as average Joe´s one.
Perhaps he simply slept with the boss's wife....or the boss....
If his design/interpretation of what is good aesthetics doesn't match mass public opinion perhaps you have a good reason for why Apple is now a follower and Samsung is a leader.
Every person's opinion of aesthetics is equal and legitimate.
Some may be culturally/professionally naive but no less valid.
What becomes popular and/or mainstream is concensus.
Fine Art is and always has been the same....the only difference is there has arisen an 'industry' of self-proclaimed 'experts' aka 'critics' who attempt to DICTATE what the public is SUPPOSED to like.
Having been an Architect for 40 years has simply taught me how to 'argue' my opinion as being educated and thus 'superior' to others....but in truth it is simply ego to justify professional fees.
If you personally think the Mona Lisa is a daggy bird with a crooked smile....then that's EXACTLY all she is.
Sadly the truth comes out and the whole world/taste thing goes to poo when the likes of 'New Direction' are lauded as great talents [typically by pre-pubescent teenagers whose taste is as fleeting in ADHD as a moth's argument with a candle]...
Apple may follow Samsung now, when it comes to hardware (stuff like CPUs, cameras, memory, NFC, etc...), but they certainly do not copy their design. They would be retarded doing so anyway, since the likes of Galaxy S3 are fugly as hell. Surely you can see it as a fellow architect.
Personally i dont think Apple products are popular cause they are "prettier" than the rest, as majority of people dont care/see it anyway, its more like that aura of luxury they managed to create around them.
I dont really agree that opinions are equal, its like saying that my opinion on quantum mechanics is equal to Hawkings, regardless of the fact that i know shit about quantum mechanics (compared to Hawking). Since aesthetics is sort of intuitive thing and you dont need IQ 150 to understand it, shall it be different?
The eye for beauty is IMHO a gift (same as high IQ). Not everyone possesses it. Thus not everyone is equally capable to judge what is aesthetically pleasing and what is not.
