Read through the entire guide and it explains everything reasonably well. Recommends excellent third party apps for defrag, backup and AV software like MalwareBytes and MSE. A must have for any noobie with links to the third party software. I recommend downloading the pdf file as it is always good to have it on hand.

While there is some good advice found in this guide for a newbie, there is also some bad.

One is, you should never use msconfig as a permanent solution for disabling start up programs. It is intended for diagnostic use only.

It also suggest increasing virtual memory by increasing the page file size but it does not suggest what to set it to.

There have been formulas for setting the pagefile manually tossed around for years. In some cases you can actually hurt performance if you manually set too low or high.

For the most part, letting Windows manage your page file is far better solution than guessing at what you should manually set it to.

A far better suggestion for performance concerning the page file is to defrag it.

After having a few bad experiances with 3rd party defrag apps, I found it best to rely on Microsoft's built in defrag utility. The problem with it and many other defrag apps is it will not defrag the page file. The best way to defrag it is to turn the page file off and reboot. Defrag the drive and turn the page file back on. You can reboot again if you want but it's not necessary.
