Mumblefratz, hasn't it be the very YOU, who reported having a planet with 20k research output.
With a single planet my best was 11K if I recall correctly. Actually I think it was Fuels Chief that hit the 20K mark and I think DethAdder hit something in between those two figures.
There's a post by DethAdder here somewhere about the topic and I think at that time my best was only 8K but as you say you're really dependent on the luck of how many research resources the galaxy has to mine.
However the point of the question is really about how bonuses of one type (i.e. research) affect production generated from focus created from the other type (i.e. military or social production). In my case I was particularly interested in the other way around, whether various production bonuses would affect production that was generated from research focus. In my case I did find out that for example power plants didn't affect production derived from research focus although global bonus from techs (a mere 30% total) and ability points (again 50% max if you're willing to spend the points on such a thing) and the only other thing I've found that increases research focus derived production is the Artifical Slave Center.
In my case there are no production type resources to mine for global production bonus that are comparable to research resouce mining however I suspect that econ SB's since they provide both an MP/SP bonus *and* a research bonus even although such bonus is limited to planets within the Starbase's AOI (area of influence). In the production case it's not real practical to have econ sb's all over the galaxy in order to incease production globally.
