So FUNNY!!! McAfee blows it!

McAfee releases an update Wednesday that flags a Windows system file as a virus, causing (possibly hundreds of) thousands of computers to go into an endless reboot cycle after the file is deleted. It seems to have affected mainly business computers. Hospitals, companies, police departments, schools...

Since the computer can't even boot into safe mode, the IT people have to go to each machine to copy the file back - one by one - presumably with a bootable CD.

 

TOO FUNNY!!!!!

Yeah, read about it on Slashdot. Very horrible. It has been many years since I ran McAfee and that was in an office where some were convinced it was the best. At that time, something was always wrong and we eventually changed.

How about all the people at home who do not have an IT handy? Tough for them.

I believer it was only corporate verions of the software that were affected.

Norton is evil...I've never had a computer that did not do bad thing...like die...while using Norton.  (This comp right here was actually killed BY Norton...Okay, so it was a corrupted version, but still...)

All anti virus programs have problems.   I started with Mcafee went to Norton then AVG and windows security. All have failed and/or have update problems..Norton,AVG and Windows Defender have all destroyed pc's on me forcing a clean install. I'm back to using Mcafee but use Malwarebytes free scanner and removal as a backup for viruses and Superantispyware free edition for spyware backup.

I use to believe as you do.  20 years ago, I swore by Norton (they helped us with an agency wide infection of Dark Avenger).  But then they got bloated, buggy and slow!  They have now seemed to have turned the corner.

However, if I was not "given" it for free (from Comcast), I would use AVG or if I bought, NOD32.

Back to the topic, While McAfee is going to get a lot of bad press on this, the fault lies with the organizations.  first rule of IT - test the updates!  Corporate editions allow the administrators to stage the updates.  They should have a few test machines lying around they could have tested this on first, before blowing it out to all their workstations.  And SERVERS!

Why did they not?  I can see 2 reasons.  One, they were just lazy.  After all, McAfee NEVER released a buggy update or DAT file before, right? (WRONG)  Or 2, newbies.  Book learning is fine, but there is no substitute for experience.

Virus scanners suck.  Bulky, slow, and useless if you don't fail @ computers.

 

gogo lavasoft adaware for the occasional trojan and windows firewall.  Virus free for years (think the last one I got was the mslaugh virus back whenever it came out and I was like 14).

I love anti-virus programs. They're so funny.

They're a perfect reflection of our immune system. They'll sometimes even attack each other if you install multiple programs 

I used Luke Filewalker just because the name is so awesome. It's somewhat bothersome though, it asks you to upgrade to the premium version like twice a day. It doesn't pop up over games though, so not a huge deal.

Funny story though.

Not testing your work goes beyond "newbie".  That's pure and total incompetence.  If you actually have the credentials for that job, you should know to test your work.  Exactly how this screwup happened is anyone's guess, but for a professional product it is utterly inexcusable.

As for Norton/McAfee, they're both equally bad.  Most of the free stuff you can find online is better than those atrocious pieces of bloatware.  Seriously, I uninstalled Norton from my new computer when I got it last year.  I won't even use it if you give it to me for free.

You are correct.  Saying they are newbies does impugn those who are, yet are competent.  It is an issue of competence.

Yeah, it was hilarious. I work at an Anti-Virus company myself and this got us a LOT of business.

We had an issue like that once. Ours took out Winlogin when removing a certain rogue AV.
