LA did not fare so well in 71.  At least not if you were on an interstate during rush hour (I was in school thankfully).

I agree, I do not see how this is good news for San Fran as it was not the San Andreas, but another fault, and probably just added stress to the San Andreas.

The reason this was relatively mild, damage wise, is there really are no tall structures in that part of the state.

This seems to be the year for large quakes.

7.7 off the coast of Sumatra.

I don't think it has as much to do with being more 'on the ball' as it does to being a sparsely populated area.

Relative to china?  Perhaps.  The epicenter was right outside Mexicali - population, over 1 million.  Tijuana is about 100 miles west of there, population, 3.5 million.  While the California side east of the mountains is sparsely populated, the Mexican side is very popular.

In the meantime the ashes spewn out by the volcano on iceland have wreaked havoc on northern and middle europe's air traffic. All airports in Scandinavia, Great Britain and parts of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium are currently closed.

Anyone wanting to place bets where and when the next earthquake or major volcanic erruption occurs?

Death toll is now over 1100.. There was also a small(4.6) quake in northwest u.s. today.
