From what I understand, there exists quoting code on other forums that seems to be more complex than what it is used on these forums. You should stick with quote and /quote to avoid the problems you are running into.
If you really feel the need to make sure that everyone knows who you are quoting, and where, you could always use the line above the quote to give the details. For instance

Quoting them with the quote-button simply puts their name plaintext in the who-attribute of the quote tag instead of escaping the brackets.

Or do something like that. The 2 examples I gave makes things pretty clear of who I'm quoting/talking to, and where the quote came from.
