DRM Yays

positive notables in game copy protection & related...

Credit where credit is due. Note that some entries may have both positives *and* negatives mentionable in this and the "DRM Nays" thread.

Sacred 2

1. You can install this game on 2 systems off a single CD.

2. A wealth of post-release patched game material (levels/quests, creatures, items, etc.).

3. No DVD required in the drive to run.

 

Prince Of Persia

1. Not interested in this one myself, but if EA is releasing it DRM-free, thats certainly laudable.

 

Left4Dead

1. Combined with the Friends feature of Steam, playing this game without the DVD in the drive is a painless blast. [No-DVD-in-drive is the point of this bullet...]

What's the point of #2 on Sacred2, that there is post-release content? How does this relate to DRM? Is it only available if you register? Not looking to pick words, just curious.

You do have to activate the game with a code, but the overall point there was to mention the quality of their overall approach... perhaps I mention it simply because it reminds me of Ironclad and Sins. Otherwise, yes it is DRM`less I guess... sorry about that.

Eh, their "overall approach" in Sacred 2 includes the DRM being Securom, including the install limit thing. (albeit with the deregister get-back-an-install option available)

There is no install limit, you can install it as many times as you want. However there's a limit of how many active copies you can have, which is two.

I don't see why Sacred 2 is on this list, it uses SecuROM. I own the game and love it, however it does not deserve to be praised for it's choice on DRM.

What is the difference between SecruRom and Starforce,  I thought the later is worse than the former, a million times worse.

SecuROM version 7.x (this is the version that has the install limit and phone home switches) behaves very much like StarForce and has many of the same issues. If it's not as bad as StarForce, it's damned close.

The reputation of both has been extremely overblown, some versions were destructive but the recent ones are not. Just more restrictive.

I don't think I've ever heard of SecuROM v7.0 causing hardware trouble. StarForce on the other hand has caused me to reinstall my sound drivers after trying to run their remove tool.

Regardless, anything incorporating either of these DRMs doesnt deserve being anywhere near the "good guy" list of (anti)DRM. I love Sacred 2, but the thought of the attached DRM makes me want to kill something. (Fortunately, the game offers plenty of oppertunities for that )

Sacred 2 allowing for two simultaneous installs off a single copy is a valid accolade pertaining to copyright tyranny.
