I want my money back

Out of memory error and crashes

3 days ago i bought this incredibly beautiful game (DC2 + the two expansions) and i begun my first game of Twilight.

All was awesome and perfect until, after some hours, i had a crash during an autosave. the error was: "Out of memory ". I tried to lower the resolutions and to allocate more memory of my computer for the programs...but nothing changed. I've not being able to do even a space battle.

The incredible thing is that my pc is good. I surpass even the recommended specifics (Ram, video card,...ecc)

So i'm incredibly disappointed. It's terrible to stop a game after hours of fun and strategic moves.

I'd like to have my money back (It's almost 40 euro that i've spent for a game that is not running)

Hope that someone could help

Thats especially odd given the performance and planetary gfx tweaks made in Twilight for just this bug ( Since the crew is out of the office until next Monday (4th of July Holiday over here in the states) would you mind posting your debug.err file here so we can try and figure out what could be wrong?

Hang in there greensonic - Stardock customer service is legendary, Support will go through crazy hoops and loops to get you up and running.

Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\*your account name*\My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor\debug.err" and cut and paste that in here. Make sure you copy it right after a crash, as it gets rewritten everytime a new game starts.

Please download and install SmartException. It is a free program and will provide the address of exactly where in the code the game crashed. This would help a lot.

You can get the program in Stardock Central's Free Stuff section. Once you install it just run it and then play the game. If it crashes, it will generate a report. Send the report to [email protected]. If you have a saved game that reproduces the crash, please zip it and send it in too.

Sorry to bother you, but, could you please tell me this.

1.] What OS are you using?
2.] How much VGA memory are you using?
3.] What version is your VGA driver?
4.] Don't use 64-Bit CPU, please use a 32-Bit.

Notes: 64-bit has problems with drivers compatibility.

Note2: Please disable UAC control and install the game again.
This might cause the problem if you're using Vista.

Until few weeks ago I had the same 'Out of memory' problem.

Nethertheless enough RAM in my machine after approx. 8 game hours CTD to windows 'Out of memory' during save, equal autosave or manual save, and than all few hours the same.

But I had always played with an own total conversion mod, and so I guessed the problem must in my own work. After intensive search I found the problem. Indeed, the models folder was too big, I had over 150 MB textures in it, textures from different foreign mods like StarTrekMod, StarWars a.s.o.
Many of these textures had a size of 1200 x 600 or so.
And so every of my modded TA game started its first round with a need of approx. 1,5 GB RAM (!)
In later games these amount grows up to more than 2 GB RAM and that was always the
reason for the 'Out of memory' situation.

So what I do?
I reduced all textures in my mods models folder with free irfanview to a maximum of 512x512 mostly less more. After this 'diet' the models folder has only approx. 50 MB.
And as a first result the startup memory comsumption of my modded TA was lower than 900 MB RAM,
(to comparison TA without active mods need at my pc in first round approx. 700 MB RAM).

What should I say. Since that time I played sandbox games hours and hours, days after days, without any single crash, no freeze nothing. Because I never passed the 2 GB deadline.

So another important question is, did / do you playing with mods especially many additional jewels?

I know it can be a royal pain, but if you manage to alt-tab out of the game (or if you're getting kicked back to windows without the program actually closing) and just let it sit for a while and then close the error message, sometimes you'll get a different message saying something about increasing memory. Close that one out, your memory usage will drop back down to around 400 MB instead of somewhere in the neighborhood of 2GB, and you can go back in to the game and save/play as normal for quite some time again. It isn't consistent, and I haven't figured out what the magic amount of time to let it sit is or why it even works in the first place, but it is a workaround until things can get sorted out.
