Difficulty levels increased?

I used to play on Normal with 5-6 races on a huge map, Dark Avatar, and I always won. No matter what victory type I chose, I always won. Now, tried the new expansion on Normal, having 2 ascension crystals under my control, 4 out of 5 empires declared me war based on that. And not only that, although I was freaking evil, all the evil empires like the dengin, still hated me! Anyone got similar experience?

I've been playing a couple of levels lower(At least till I get the hang if the new tech trees) and am having a hard time of it. Just give it some time there's a lot of new goodies to learn and a smarter AI to help you along by showing you your mistakes .

The AI is significantly improved in TA, time to drop down a difficulty level or two.

real simple question. I am in middle of playing a game but forget what difficulty level I had. Is here anyway to know?

Go to the foreign relations screen and look at the stats tab under Misc. It will show you the AI Intelligence level. It is not the same as difficulty so you'll have to translate it. for instance AI intelligence of Incredible=Masochistic for difficulty. Look in the GalCiv Wiki for a full list.

They are way more opportunistic! Best be doing a better job of keeping your military rating up.

It's also important to keep the AIs at war with each other, even when it's expensive to do so (particularly on suicidal in my experience). It buys you time to get a bigger stick .

I've been playing on Crippling and yes, every game has been a fight for survival. The new Drengin in particular have been a regular pain in my posterior.

Going for ascension does make a big difference though, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're in a strong position. All 3 AI's were cool or worse when I was "ascending". Then I dropped the thing and a few turns later, 2 out of 3 were friendly. After allying with them they didn't mind my ascension anymore.

I have not tired ascension but the game seems easier than DA. The AI is less aggressive than I am used to, even Dregin who are my closest neighbours are rather docile. It may be just this game: I was lucky to get PQ 18 colony.
