From playing challenging and tough prior to the MVL and now to be winning on Crippling is awesome!!!

That's a great step up. The league certainly challenges a person to push the max. I managed to truly win my first suicidal game using these settings, though not until year 1.

Year 0 games are hard, your economy will crash; just play it like there is no tomorrow! Once you get the ship's built that you need, turn other stuff off! No need to improve your planets after about April or May, and only build ships from the planets you can afford to. It seems to require adjusting the sliders every turn to try to absolutely eliminate waste. Detail orientated players like Mumble and Wyndstar probably love this kind of challenge!

Can I get a quick clarification? Reading the Rulebook, are we still going by all ties get the 1 point bonus, or did we change it to "speed tiebreak is by score, and score tiebreak is by speed" thing?

Just curious, because if I'm reading it correctly, all these 0 year wins will get 1 point for speed?

Whether I make the point or not, I really enjoyed the challenge of the year 0 win. It's not something I've ever tried to do before. It's difficult because you're running in the red the whole time. Every bc you spend makes a difference and you have to put thought into every expense. A lot of it comes down to how many cash anomolies your auto-survey is lucky enough to get. It was funny for me, after playing these MVL games for a few days, I went to start a Meta game and I went, "wait a minute, how do I play the big game again?" hehe.

if there are only four 0yr wins, then they would all get the bonus point. If there are more than that, the 4 highest scoring 0yr games get the BP
Reply #55 Top
Ok, I just needed to know if I had to simply get zero years, or if I had to be in the top 4 of zero years. Thank you for the answer.

Seeing wyndstar's game I just started wondering if my game will actually get a point for the fastest game,

I wouldn't worry about it too much. :) Speed ties are broken by score and a 0 year 17.8K is going to be awful tough to beat. In fact I don't think I have much of a shot competing on the speed side of the equation with DL given DA has approximately 2x the planets. But perhaps not. I'm wondering if you even had the chance to colonize all your planets.

It's good to get your game in early if you can. The submission bonus is actually what made the difference with team E's victory last round. Without it there would have been a three way tie for first.

However there is a downside to submitting early. Once you submit then you're out of it and just have to wait and see, whereas as long as you haven't submitted you can tweak a longer higher scoring game or still try to shave another year off your fast game.

Opps. Haven't changed the Rulebook. Will do. ;p

Added the speed/score tiebreak criteria to the rules.

Also added the auto-submit clause to the non-submission process. Glad we went with the "simple" version since that process is now up to 6 paragraphs long. Also the concept of games that are "obviously" better than others could be considered to be added to the non-submission clause relating to games played by other members of the team. However this hasn't been discussed and I'm not sure we want to go there.

Just thought i would post that i have changed the name of my MVL character. The Commissioner is now Poseidon..Steward of Delphi.

Just so there is no confusion.

The AI does that for you. Colonizing in these sort of games means having a very special technology and about two billion troops ...er... colonists for every "Colony Ship".

The first game I tried was with DL. My feeling is that it's easier to make a year 0 win in DA. With such a short game, the extreme colonization techs never get researched so extreme planets never get colonized. In DL, there are more colonized planets to deal with and it takes longer to conquer all of them. Also, it costs more which makes it harder to take the board before you run out of money.

My submission for Round 6, The A Team, Califdude:

Character: Wotan
Race: Custom, DA
3 yr.
Challenging
Military Victory
5,950 Points.
Submission Date: 1/23/08

Is this an adequate submission? I don't know how to submit a game directly from the MV account.

Usually we also post a screenshot from our MV score, see the post of Elwood011 as an example; I don't remember whether such a screenshot is necessary, in any case it doesn't hurt to post it.
it is useful but not necc. as long as you have the timestamp listed for the game

i've located your game just fine Califdude so no worries.

I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to post a screenshot. Can someone give me instruction? Assume my IQ at about 80 for instructions. Thanks.

Just to make sure everyone is up to date on rule changes for this round. The vote was clear at 9 versus 5 for speed ties to be broken by score and vice versa. This has been reflected in the OP of the rules thread.

Also we did reach agreement (one way or another) about the captains ability to submit a players game. Basically there is no such ability but we do "automatically" submit the best game a player has submitted to the MV if one exists. The best game is defined by the game with the highest score/year ratio and if tied one will be selected at random by the commissioner/vice commissioner. For submission purposes this happens in the last instant of a round. Again the OP of the rules thread has been updated to reflect this.

Also we did discuss the concept of time based submission ranking but came to no conclusion and therefore we will continue to score submisson based on rank order as we have during previous rounds.

Have the window with the screen you want to post as the active window. Hit Alt-Print Screen, that's hit the "print screen" key (usually above the Insert key) while holding down the "Alt" key. This copies the active window to your clipboard.

Then open up Paint (Start/Programs/Accessories/Paint) and enter Ctrl-V (hold ctrl key and V key depressed at the same time). This pastes the original screen into Paint. From there you can crop or edit the picture but if you don't know how to do this then when you initially take the screenshot (i.e. Alt-Print Screen) you should size and scroll the window to view the screen as you would like it displayed.

From there save the file (goto File/Save As...) and select JPEG format. Save the file to your desktop or wherever and then open a browser window to http://www.imageshack.us/, browse to where you saved the picture and press the "host it" button. Ignore the Yahoo popup and then copy (highlight and press ctrl-c) the direct link to image. Then post to this thread using the "Insert Image" link (looks like mountains and a sunset) and paste it (ctrl-v) into the thread.

Simple as pie. :)

I should be ready to post a score soon. I just want one or two more shots a posting a good score.
whenever you are ready Idazen; you can play as many times as you want before you make an official submission. just make sure to contact your team first

SB, I take it from this post that it is the date stamp in your MV games record that determines your submisson rank, rather than the date you decided to submit the game for MVL record, provided you made the submission before the Round ending date. If that is so, you can shoot a good game, but hold off submitting it while you try to improve on it without losing your early submission rank for the good early game. Do I have that right? Thanks as always.

In Round 6, my first game looked like it might be my best shot. My team captain, DethAdder, said to try more times if I wanted to. But I thought even if I didn't have a blockbuster score I could at least help my team toward the submission rank bonus point by submitting without further delay, so I submitted it. I'm fine with that, but I'd like to be sure of the rule for next time.
