Forum bug, Opera minority thing, or just my "personal" PC misery?

I've admitted in other posts here that I have no trust and little affection for my new-last-August Vista box. But today's most annoying behavior made me wonder if the Stardock folks have tweaked their forum code in a way that updated Opera browsers can't handle. I'm typing in Mozilla, but sometime today I noticed in Opera that the edit boxes were invisible even if I tried all sorts of mouse-stabbing and refreshing the thread page.

Do I really need to try starting from the OEM restore disc level on this box, or was there a forum code change today that Opera can't handle? I'm actually one of their paid customers (they were way ahead of "the industry leaders" on pop-up control & tabs) and I'd be happy to report the bug to them formally.

I dunno what your talking about, except that i have occasionally encountered the edit boxes being blacked out on this forum. I would just open the site later on and it would always work fine again.

At the very least, someone needs to make a validation pass at the forum markup. That would cut compatibility problems way the heck down.

I didn't restart my whole system, but a fresh Opera instance today still has the bug. I used their "Report a site problem" feature to let them know also.

I remember the WWW back when the only top-level domains were .edu, .gov, and .mil. The *whole point* was to make a *standard* that all browsers could support and all content providers could understand and use easily. Then the marketing mavens and venture capitalists got involved. I'd give up half the bells and whistles on the modern web in exchange for true browser neutrality and clear, reliable ways to protect user privacy.

Well, I can type in Opera, but it seems like that is still useless. I just tried starting a "real" Off-Topic thread from Opera and after clicking Post Reply I was informed that "This post has been removed."

SD has always been consistently unsupportive of Opera. From an issue a while back I was told they didn't like they way it did something or other, and didn't feel it was worth the effort to support...(they do have limited staff resources, after all). It's been a while since Opera out and out didn't work for me on the site (though there was a time), but it never looks right.

For instance, ever since they redid the site, in Opera every other post topic is highlighted in a Blinding White Box that is hideous, but Ive somehow gotten used to.

And no, I won't stop using Opera, Thanks. It's had the features that Firefox users seem to boast about so often for years now, mouse gestures that are ingrained in my nerve endings and I couldnt live without, and is a good way to avoid all the dodgy exploits and malware designed around flaws in IE, and in an increasing amount, in Firefox as it grows in popularity. And I dont have these problems very often at all, outside of SD's "unique" forum system.

But I don't even bother reporting Opera issues to them anymore. I always come away feeling like the red headed stepchild.

I paid Opera for a license, so even though I also feel a bit like the cuckoo's chick, I'm able to muster my US-born sense of entitlement and gripe to them sicne they got 30 or 40 bucks out of me a year or two ago.

I'm also sympathetic to Stardock's limited resources problem re their web offerings.

But my dark-snarky side really wants to spew verbose invective about wallowing in bling when we all just need the basic food, clothing, and shelter. I'd've been posting here all along if the site were still monochrome and text-only.

Well gawsh and gollee, TPTB has gone and fixed up things. I can type *and* post from Opera this morning.

For instance, ever since they redid the site, in Opera every other post topic is highlighted in a Blinding White Box that is hideous, but Ive somehow gotten used to.

You can workaround this:

Tools> Quick Preferences > Edit site Preferences.....

Click on the network Tab and Set the Browser ID to "Mask as Firefox"

This will fix the fourm lists. However, the Icons in the text box where you type to reply to a post will no longer be centered properly. They will just be a few pixels to high, but will still function properly when you clock on them.

I'h had opera since the 90's. It had all the features of the newer browsers a decade ago (tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, built in mail and torrent systems, rss feeds, YaY). I feel it can be a little a head of its time, but it is a great browser and definietely geared toward the user experience (Speed dial = amazing).

Edit = Actially, while we're on Opera, has anyone really fooled around with the new(er) Widgets thing? I noticed a while ago they jumped on teh widget bandwagon (along with everyone and thier mom) and I didn't pay it much attention as I already had Konfabulator (Yahoo Widgets now)and Rainlendar

Oh yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest, i would be perfectly happy with IE if Microsoft had bothered to put a 'delete' option in the toolbar display menue instead of the useless 'hide when inactive' or 'always hide' which of course, do not work against toolbar raiders. Oh how happy i would be if a little 'delete' was in there to!!!!
