Starbase bonuses verses planitary bonuses (DL)

Hi

I got a planet which had a quantity of bonuses i have never seen before;

Planet quality of 9 with a 300+ manufacturing, 100+ manufacturing, 300+ science, 300+ science, 100+ science and finally 700+ science!

But that is not why i am here, I am here because once i had built 3rd level science buildings and a science capital, the planet was still only achieving a pathetic 250 somthing science!

Now i am used to my best science planets being pathetic untill i start adding starbase bonusses, then i can usually get in the area of 4000 science! but meanwhile with all those precursor bonuses, i find it curious that the science rate is still so weak without starbases?

If you check the tech tree you'll see the ONLY bonus you can get there is 10% from early Planetary Improvements tech. OTOH factory production gets 40%, and racial points also give more (10% increase for 1 point). Until you get a research resource or two, and some starbases' support, is research really not strong. Include here the fact that NO bonuses got transferred with focus into mil or soc production, and you get really slow development of all-labs planets until NLCs.

At least labs give more output as factories...

A PQ of 9 with those bonuses is really "only" like a PQ 27 without bonuses and only a PQ 23 if you're only looking at research.

Meanwhile, a 16-starbase array roughly *quadruples* the effective number of labs.

Yes this is correct! still, it is the best science planet i have ever had.

Ok, my gov spending was 100% and everything else was like 33% (balanced).

I built as many starbases as possible and got it up over 2000science.

Later, once i had enough ships and nothing building, i upped the science rate to 70% and achieved over 5000science! Lucky i had a megga strong economy which had boosted my funds to well over 60000bc so i could hold that science spending for some time before running out of money! lol
