planet quality bonus trait 10% 20% is it worth it?

Hallo have not posted in a long time, but am still playing the game and lurking on the boards. One question though: i really like to have more place on my planets, so +20% planet quality is often found among my traits, although the 8 points are a whole lot and do hurt. Reading the forums i have yet to find someone who also uses it, and i myself am not sure if these points would not be better spent on other traits . So your thoughts about the trait and its usefullness/ strategies to implement along with it?
I usually take some diplomatic, morale and economy bonuses along with it and fare pretty well, but your opinions on strategies would be very welcome.

A possible improvement would be to increase the chance of bonus tiles on planets, but what does influence the probability to get them, luck? I tried to play with luck but there didn`t seem to be more bonus tiles. Maybe if i had even more luck - the generalist party comes to mind - it would make a dufference? I usually take either populists or economists.
Also could luck influence the bonus tiles if they are created in the beginning of the game, or are they created when you colonize?

So the question is: Planet quality bonus worth it or not?
And if yes how do you use it? (Possible implememntation: Luck, to get more bonus tiles from already "bigger" planets. If it works that way.)

IMO in DL yes, in DA not. 8 points is too expensive for just one more green tile on planets PQ 5-10 and for 2 tiles above 10, because I can get for only 4 points 30% better econ everywhere.

I haven't tried the game with the planet quality bonus but I've noticed that if you have the luck attribute then, in later game, around when every civ is pretty well established luck will come into play and your people will find Ranger Class ships and they'll be put to use. After several playthroughs with luck I've noticed luck doesn't really help to much.

I am in a deep rut about playing Neutral and getting Xeno Ethics fairly early, and I'm not a score-maximizer. I like spending a few of my ability points on minimum green-thumb (10% I think) because it makes a difference for the way I like to work midsize worlds (9-12s).

Thank you, i read the explanation in wiki and now i understand that the feeling to get less tiles in DA than in DL from terraforming -or the instant terraforming- i often play neutral, was in fact right. Darn. Okay, then i will have my superdiplomats again. Thanks to everyone for their answers and still interested in more.

And one other question remains: is there some factor that dictates the number of bonus tiles? I am still not ruling luck out, any thoughts? Also has someone noticed an increase in random colonising events with luck?

I play with Luck selected consistently, because of the combat results calculation bonus and because I am convinced it DOES lead to the discovery of more precursor ships in the mid-late game. However, I have also done a lot of experimenting with starting planet characteristics, including LOTS of restarts, so I have probably seen several hundred home planet terrains generated with Luck turned on. My impression is that Luck characteristic DOES NOT affect the distribution of bonus tiles - sometimes its 1, sometimes its none, sometimes its 4.

Something else to consider about the PQ characteristic however. If your starting planet is normally a PQ 10 for your race (or a custome race), the most common situation, by taking the 10% PQ bonus the home world is raised to PQ 11. All planets with PQ > 10 get a 10% Morale bonus; for your homeworld that is worth quite a bit.

There are several extensive threads in the forums discussion the effects of the Luck Characteristic. Scan them for the comments by kyro and other Stardock reps; take all other comments with a large grain of salt. Including my own.

Wouldnt placing two stock markets give us +50% econ everywhere. And +75% econ on 20+ planets. Or are these different percentages. Sorry for bumping an old thread.

Ok, after testing they appear to be different and multiplicative. However, since they are different, they provide the same bonus if only one type is present. Thus, a low PQ planet with one extra tile and a stock market are almost equal if needed. Observe:

30% race bonus and 10% from colony building is 1,3*1,1= 1,43*money.

0% race bonus and 10%+25% stock market from an extra tile is 1,35*money

Logically, a low PQ research planet with one extra research building will be more productive. Same for a factory planet.

A PQ26 planet will receive 5 more tiles, thats +125% econ. My money PQ26 world in a recent game had +775% bonus with a 20%PQ bonus. So it would be either 1*8,75 or 1,3*7,5= 8,75 vs 9,75

Which is again less money than w/o economic picks(duh), however we are also getting 5 more tiles for a hypothetical PQ26 research planet and since research facilities and factories produce a base number of "things", those will be again multiplied by capitals, powerplants etc, which could lead to some scary results. Tech cap, RCC, ORC, 175% research bonus and suddenly those 5 tiles transform into.. 14?

So in effect we are getting less money but more of everything else. Hmm..

Have you tested this or are you just speculating? Also, what game version?
