Wii users: are you still playing with it?

This question goes out to the folks that have been lucky enough to buy a Nintendo Wii console. Just the simple question asking whether or not you are still playing with it?

Seriously, I've followed conversations among friends at another site I frequent and they've generally been making comments about 'The last time I turned it on...' or 'The last time I played with it...' with time frames of weeks at a time.

So, if you have a Nintendo Wii are you still playing with it? or, have you found yourself less enthusiastic and enthralled with the Wii than you originally thought?

I guess what I am asking is what happens with Nintendo Wii systems after the initial rush wears off? Do you find yourself hoping for some killer game title to come out so that you'll have a good reason to turn the system on or are you very happy with the box and the software that exists currently?

It mostly comes out when there are people over, since it is an incredible party system, but the fact of the matter is that I just haven't been playing many games. The 360 stays silent, too. I suspect that I'll be picking it up again once more games come out for it, since the only really engaging single player game I have for it is Twilight Princess (awesome game, by the way, though it appears that my zeal to follow the main storyline to the detriment of the side quests shortened the play time considerably... which is a testament to the quality of the story and characters!). I'm waiting for Metroid and Smash Bros, now.

It's still wild fun, though, whenever I bust it out. Raving Rabbids has limited single player replay value, though...

I'm 44 and I play with my Wii constantly. You'd think that by now I'd have worn my Wii out, but I haven't. It's still something I have to do every day. Sometimes several sessions depending on how I feel.

Not a lot lately. The trouble seems to be that since third party publishers didn't expect the popularity it's seen, they had relatively few games planned for 2007. As such there's been a bit of a drought as we wait for the big first party titles to hit this fall and winter.

I'd expect that come 2008 things will start to pick up quite a bit as more good games start rolling out.

They need some mature games. RE4 is good, but it's already been done on just about every console out there, including PC. They need a game like Black and White, something that utilizes the wii-mote.

I think the Wii is going to be in serious trouble as time marches on and the PS3 and 360 start to fulfill their potential. I really don't understand all the hype around it. Besides the novel, and in my opinion gimmicky, controls what is the strength of this system? Graphics? This thing isn't even HD, what a joke. It looks really dated and will only get worse in the next few years. I know graphics aren't the most important factor in gaming, but come on, games look horrible on this thing. Right now it doesn't even have strong multiplayer.(I know that they've promised more) Personally I don't care about Mario and Zelda, they are old ideas. And JubJub15 hit it on the head with the Wii not having enough mature content, which I don't think Nintendo will ever remedy since they seem satisfied with the 12 and under crowd.(Pokemon anyone?)

I realize that many CASUAL gamers like the Wii and the novelty it brings. I think that is what is driving these early sales. However, like I said, the Wii is going to be in trouble once the casual gamers have moved on to the next novel gadget. The hardcore audience will shy away from the system in time due to the weakness of the hardware. One simply needs to look and the Gamecube for reference. Better yet look at the software lineup for the Wii, the focus being similar to the Gamecube, younger and more casual gamers. Nobody except Nintendo thinks the Gamecube was a success.

Since Nintendo actually seems to make money by selling their hardware, while other companies lose money selling their hardware, I'd say they can call it a success without selling as many units.

Also, my wife is not a CASUAL gamer. She HATES video games. She wants a Wii. That kind of gimmick, that would make someone who does not like video games want to purchase it, is exactly what will make it a success.

Never mind the dating potential the unwed will find in it.

You prove my point exactly, she HATES video games, yet wants a Wii. How convoluted is that? People such as your wife are the exact reason the system will be a distant third in the console wars.

Your wife falls under the category of 'casual' which is simply a generalization meant to portray someone who's not really into video games (she hates them) but plays them once in a while. (she wants a Wii, presumably to play video games on)

Except Nintendo never said that Gamecube was a success. In fact, they considered it an eye opening failure. It was mentioned that if the Wii sold like Gamecube it would be viewed, by Nintendo, as a failure of a console.

However I do agree that they need more content that is not party games, pokemon, or cell shaded kiddie games. Gamecube had a start on a few of them (Eternal Darkness was amazing) but never followed up with more.

Just sold ours to my younger brother who is still a bachelor with time to play. We got it in Feb....played it maybe 6 times. It wasn't that I didn't like it...but rather it seems so juvenile and simplistic against cool stuff like Gal Civ 2!

Kryo's got it right. The lack of third party games is caused by the fact that it's success came out of nowhere... I'm expecting my system to see much more use next year. Hell, the end of this one, with the blockbuster games coming out, will probably see much of my time wasted in front of the thing. In between playing Halo 3 obsessively, that is.

So many games, so little time.

But I can say this: the controller is sure as hell no gimmick, at least, not when the game utilize it to it's potential. The speaker on the controller is a gimmick. The controller itself is anything but.

If I hadn't burned through 70 hours of Twilight Princess (I'm a big fan of 100% completion) in two months, I probably would be.

I do pull it out once and awhile to try a few more times to beat Roll Goal (damn you Roll Goal!), or find those last few Poe Souls, but not so much.

Its not the system's fault I burned through the game so fast, or that I don't actually own any other games...

If I had Call of Duty, or Wario Ware, or one of the other various titles, I'm positive I'd play it more. Its just that constant money problems (a gallon of milk costs over $3!) have prevented me from getting any games :_(

P.S. I've noticed that most of the people who give the Wii crap are the ones who haven't played it

Agreed. I find lately, though, that it's easier and much more satisfying to let someone else play with my Wii. I'm selfless like that. Plus, my hands get sore.

It's not that the new controls cater to a more casual crowd. It's that the controls are perfect for games that are more widely accessible, which in turn draw a casual crowd. It's true that the standard console games ported over to the Wii are completely gimmicky (Mortal Kombat, anyone?). Wii will never be as good as an XBox360 or PS3 at playing standard console games. But the Wii opens up opportunities for new games and new interfaces, which I think is its big strength. I think Wario Ware and Mario Party 8, for example, are perfect examples of Wii awesomeness.

i've found the Wii is a very group oriented console. i don't own one, but i've played on them more than once on game nights at friends' homes. these are college and grad students in their mid 20s mostly. while the game content isn't mature, some of the comments it sparks patently are. i can't justify buying one for myself because i don't tend have small casual gamers over very often, but the people who do have them seem to have gotten their money's worth.

Ay yi yi! Don't even mention pokemon. I've never liked that crap since I was young. For god sakes kids, read a book! It's a lame card trading game, and it's probably a lame game too. (Never really cared for card trading games in the first place) If you want to kill your opponent, bash his head in or shoot him, or stab him, or bash his head in. One of my most favorite scenes in a movie is when Indiana jones is being threatened by this Arabian swordsman swinging his sword all around, from 20 feet away. Indiana Jones smile and shoots him. That simple.

If you want a role plaing game, play Oblivion or -......dang can't think of another one.
