It's somewhat dissapointing really, games are still created around the same core concepts and mechanics as they were twenty years ago for the most part, they might have new bells and whistles or flashy 3D graphics, but there's no real change in the basic ideas behind them.
Well, in my opinion, the new pretty 3D graphics are kind of a problem. Many many companies rely on good-looking interface/gameplay to sell a bugged, boring game that has absolutly no depth. I've seen many. The thing is that old games were very limited in graphic technology, so maybe the Devs were working more on the content and depth of the game instead of working on nice graphics. Or maybe it's just a change of mind in the business.
Of course, some games are not like this. Games like HL, HL2, GalCiv2, MoH, etc.
I still play Star Wars Rebellion, because that game has deep strategic content (and really really poor graphics heheh). But unfortunatly for me, with my newest video card drivers (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro), my mouse pointer has become a big black box that hides 1/4 of the screen... so I can't play anymore
