DA 1.6 Unusual Runtime Termination

Hello everyone,
I just updated to Dark Avatar 1.6 from the last beta. When I reach the select player race screen, the racial ship type preview window shows no ship and soon after crashing to a warning message saying the application asked for an unusual runtime termination. It crashes with the same message if I try to load a save game.

I'd say the lack of available memory is the culprit. You must have something awfully large running in the background to take up so much of the pagefile. And with only 512MB of RAM, GC2 will need at least a couple of gigs of pagefile available to run reliably.

To increase the amount of Virtual Memory available to Windows:

1) Right click on the My Computer icon and chose properties
2) Click on the advanced tab
3) Under performance, click on the Settings button.
4) Click on the advanced tab
5) Click on the change button
6) Change the initial size to the recommended size and then increase the maximum size.

As a note, you should make sure that you have enough hard drive space left for the maximum virtual memory size or you'll start having problems whenever Windows has to allocate more virtual memory. You can get the size of the virtual memory in gigs by dividing the number by 1024.

To cut down on GalCiv2/DA's memory usage:

+ turn off the background stars and nebulas
+ play on Medium galaxies or smaller with fewer opponents
+ reduce the availability of habitable planets, number of stars, etc
+ don't use high res mods

i had the same issue. What fixed it for me was deleting my prefs.ini file.

Until I did that the game would get to that screen and GC2 would ctd. Never had the problem before the latest patch, none of the beta patches caused it either.
