Alliances with minor races

How do I break them?

When recently playing I found myself in an odd situation that I was unable to overcome. I was trying to win by conquest, but had made an alliance with a minor race. I was going to break the alliance off and attack them, but I was unable to find any way at all to break my treaty with them. Not only that, I wasn't able to attack them because of the alliance, and the game told me I had to break the alliance with them before I could attack. Only problem was I couldn't figure out how!

Anyone know what I was missing?

Dunno if you havent tried this (and you probably have) but it's one of those "check this first" - do you have "Declare War" in diplomacy, and have you tried just attacking one of thier ships/space stations/thier planet with one of your ships?

You could always get another civ to declare war on them, and then refuse to honor the alliance. That should break it.

You don't need to defeat the minor race to win by conquest anyway. Worst comes to the worst, just ignore them and invade someone else.

That's true. The condition for a Conquest Victory stipulates Major races - not Minor.

But, if you simply want to break an alliance with a Minor, the options are severely limited compared to a Major race.
