Mdding Governments

Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there anyway to modify the governments in the game to make them more interesting than just a linear progression. Allow you to choose between stellar dictatorship, democracy, oligarchy etc.?

I can't find an approrpiate file to edit.

Unfortunatley that is not moddable as such. You can change the names of the 3 governments, and the techs that enable them, but the bonuses and the number of governments are hardcoded.

This is one feature that really needs to be made moddable, IMO.

Who is with me in the campaign for moddable governments?

I'm more interested in alternate governments, that might exist along side democratic forms of government. They could be selected instead of Democracy. Other types of governments have existed in this world in the past: Communism, Theology, Plutocracy, etc. It would be interesting to have these as alternate choices to more Democratic forms of government.

Not every space faring race was peaceful when the Terran Alliance gave Hyperdrive to the galaxy. So why should every race be governed by the same set of ideals, such as freedom, or equality?

I agree with you. Although everyone starts out as Imperial, i think players should be able to expand down that path, not just the 'Justice' path.

Yeah, it just doesn't make ny sense for the a race like the Dregin or even the Yor to allow voting in their goverment.

Yes, that's what I wanted to do with the mod anyway. Its an odd lapse by the game designers.

As a bizarre but possible alternative way of doing it (though it would force you to make one decision about your new 'government' and then never change), but is it possible to create mutually exclusive techs? Then you could have a special 'government brance' of the tech tree, in which you have a number of research choices, when you choose to research one that is effectively you choosing that form of government (and it gives you various bonuses) but then you can't be any of the others?

Just a thought.

Well there is a sneaky way around this,if you don't mind losing political parties.

You change the name of the governments to reflect a 'higher level' of government
achieved.For example,everyone starts at level one government ,as a nation gets better at governing it self and acquires more skill it progresses to the next level.

The actual types of governments will take the place of the parties.
And since you can set these in DA the Drengins might be Communists,the Terrens,might be
a Democracy ,the Iconians Fundamentalists,and maybe the Arceans are Imperialists,
the Altarians ,a Constitutional Monarchy,and so on.

Then you would vote to change the government not the party,like what happend in the former Soviet Union.

Which would bring you to the last roadblock ,bonuses and penalties for adv govs,which are hardcoded.To me people gaining power to the point of social instability is reflective of human nature therefore no Government is immune.So for me accepting the increased necessity to keep people happy as you progress is natural.

It works for me until governments become moddable !
