The One event that truely sucks

putting grandma incharge of the starship

I hate the speed limit of 5 event. Plauges no prob thats why I carry a sliderule, Peace Keeper fleet nasty but fun, OOO goody break away colonies all fun to handle. The one thing there is no work around that I know of is the galactic speed limit of 5. I picture the starship captains with there old hadrian grandma by them ready to whack them with an umbrella if they go to faster than 5. Why its the wimpyfication of the male of the species all over again. On Huge maps this takes the game down to a snails pace. Who is the evil SOB who came up with this. Why my Stumpbreaker class troopships cant drygulch anyone anymore.

BTW let the dreadlords get on there feet before you jump them can you say class 36 with most of it in Industrial sectors will turn out the dreadnaughts quick quick.

maybe they ought to let you select what mega events are included. it'd be an easy way to please both sides.

I honestly think that's probably the best answer. It'd leave the devs totally free to make events as "mega" as anyone could want, since the people that don't like them could just turn that specific event off. Do that, then give me a Dread Lords event that rocks my world.

CMON GOD! I've fought the Dreadlords, I can take YOU on! Lol, but why would space change? Space just doesn't *Change*, it would have to be a cataclysmic event to do that! Something around the areas of The Big Rip, Dark matter gone amuck, or the space time continuum is disrupted so much it threatens to destroy the universe. If space did change, they wouldn't say speed limit, they would say: "Space has been ripping because of intense hyperdrive travel. To keep it safe, the speed of our ships must be lowered to five parsecs."

That I agree with. This event should be followed immediately by the destruction of a few worlds into asteroid belts to show how space cataclysmically changed.

As I play Korath, that shouldn't be a problem, as my soldiers do their duty or I release them out into space without a suit if I am a generous, or with a suit and a months worth of oxygen, food, and water if I am especially evil and not so generous!!! That way, they can just float around for a month until they suffocate!!!

I really hate this mega event.

I love the others, but every time this one comes up I feel like never using them again. It would be nice to have the option to enable/disable certain mega events from showing up.

Obviously if your playing such a great game as Galciv and having lots of fun, then somthing happens to destroy that fun, your going to winge about it - that is perfectly reasonable!

Yeah, this happened to me, and the event isn't necessarily "unbalanced" or "unfair," but it *is* something even worse - it's unFUN.

On the one hand, it's not fun and frustrating. On the other hand, in my last game where it happened nobody got to run away from my Lucky Ranger. On the other hand, it's unbalancing as it makes engine techs completely useless.
And on the other hand.. I seem to have four hands.

Making the engine techs useless isn't bad. Of course, it does handicap the AI a bit, becuase I'm sure they'll all keep researching it.

Of course, if you get Hyperwarp III + Grav. Accelerators, I think you could make 5pc/wk without engines, right? So that isn't so useless.

A big upside is that cheap engines will get you the fastest ship allowable. If the AI can't adapt...well...

In any case, I have to say the Jagged Knife event is a lot worse. Suddenly my best planets are arbitrarily assigned to these tossers? Bah! It really should be something like planets that are below 70% approval revolt. But not my core worlds with 100%!

I think this event was possibly introduced due to the games original intent. I believe I read somewhere on these forums that Brad Wardell never really intended for ships to reach the incredible speeds that players have hit during game play. I think he said that the original AI was built around the average speed of about 8 parsecs a week. Therefore, the AI should be much more formidable at these lower speeds making the games much more difficult to win at higher levels of play.

I personally like a challenge and play each of my games to the end win or lose. The challenge is what is fun for me, then again I do fancy myself as a strategist.

Actually, the 5pc/wk one isnt the worst

Have you guys never gotten the "spies are here, we are infesting every planet, enjoy" event ? It's really terrible if you've already used quite a few spies, so the costs are exorbitant, then the spies are on your econ tiles - that event sucks the most amount of suckable objects.

As far as the speed limit goes... Make the penalty for exceeding the limit be the random destruction of ships that go faster than 5. The faster you go, the more frequent the demise. If you don't want the ships to be faster than 8, make destruction virtually certain at that speed. You could make this a "structural-integrity" type of thing, requiring the research and installation of a ship component to reinforce the hull integrity (to eak out that last 2 or three parsecs/week w/o suffering destruction.)

Wow, I'm amazed that no one else came up with this.

How about, if you can't 'warp' space, don't warp it! Build stronger normal space engines! Just simply go faster, don't worry about how close the destination is. the techs would only appear after the even happened, branching out from Hyperdrive. Then you would just build different kinds of engines to push you through normal space instead of it being warped. They wouldn't work nearly as well, and you'd have to research more before you get any bonus. But you could go faster in the end of that tech line.

This is my first time playing a huge map and this event kicks in. This is not fun and should be removed or made optional for the people who love it so much.
So much for my "Interceptors", thanks.

Here is another idea for that bright guy who came up with this event: "We have found out that Black Hole weapons cause galactic warming, all weapons except the class 1 Laser are illegal now." ....... and about 2 years later the next warning comes up "Upps sorry, Lasers are bad too, here use this galactic rubber band, this asteroid and create a monster sling shot instead".....

I have only about 1/8th of the galaxy so far. Do you realise how long it will take me to finish the game?

Not much time at all. As others have been saying, this event changes the whole paradigm of the galaxy, reasserts that this is a BIG place, with long distances, that make parochial conventional conquest impractical; kinda like, good as he was, Ghengis Khan was never going to conquer the WHOLE world - the very nature of the world would not support it. Change strategy to go for technology win, or maybe an alliance win, with you as the silent partner. Sounds like you are already well positioned to finish the tech tree and ascend.

True, unless the game goal you are playing is a conquest victory only. I just ended my game since I planned on posting my score to the metaverse but with this "event" a conquest victory would take another 10 or 15 years and since time is a major penalty - game over.

I don't think I have ever played a game where, after playing for two days, I felt like I wasted two days.

lol Geminisama my games are long in the gianormous galaxy. And it comes up every time. And yeah I research the engine techs to get even more free space for even more weapons and defensese. It happens every tiem it seems I have had only 1 game where this one never came up.

The AI needs to understand certain things when certain auto events happen

When the speed limit thing is introduced- the AI should be hard-scripted to not build engines that give >5 moves. Note: I know the devs hate hard-coding, but hard-coding in 100% humans won't do it scenarios is ok.
