Stacks of many ships causing slowdown

The AI always seems to cluster huge stacks of ships together like this, causing a lot of slowdown once a few of these clusters are on the map. I think it would be better to show stacks another way. Instead of 30 ships all morphed into a huge soup of polygons, perhaps only show the top fleet/ship in the stack, and use some sort of icon or icons to show how many ships are in the stack like civ4 does. Something like this could really cut down on map clutter in my opinion.

You can always zoom out to the iconic view when something annoying like this happens. But yea, I think stardock can give us a solution to the problem in the future. Maybe an option where you can limit the number of ships shown on a single tile when they are all stacked on top of each other?

I get tons of slowdowns because of this and I've got a decent PC. Once this happens my frames go down from 50ish down to the teens.

Ditto.

I've got an e6600 with 2GB and a 7900GTX, and those stacks of ships like that bring my system to its knees... I have to start using the icon mode till the AI pans them out a bit.

That's happened to me as well (though only from the piles of Drengin Super Dominator Corvettes).

And besides the slowdown, it looks really ugly having a huge pile of polygons all morphed together.

At this point I either zoom way in, so there is less space to render, and fewer ships to render, or zoom way out, to the Icon level. Late game, with the eyes of the universe, I can expect 3 to 5 minutes between turns, even at the Icon level.

Oh well, I do have an older celeron, with a gforce 5700, and 1.5 meg main memory.

I agree that it ought to show the best ship or fleet and iconify the rest, like in Civ 4.

Yeah, even with a killer rig, I get slowdowns.

This is something I'd classify as a bug or at least a problem that needs to be fixed because it adds nothing to game play that a "stacked ships" icon wouldn't, but it slaughters frame rate.

I dread the Drengin going to war not because of the power (lol, right) of Super Dominator, but because of the massive clumps of corvettes.
