Metawhat?

What exactly is this Metaverse? The instructions don't say much, and the sticky info thing gives almost no information at all.

I'm somewhat interested in it; but I really don't know anything about it. What are the rules? Do I have to use specific settings? A Race? Do I have to join some sort of specific metaverse galaxy, or is it an overall thing?

What on Earth is it, and why should I play it?

Just create a character here, then start a new game through the Metaverse button on the game's main menu instead of the New Game button.

Metaverse games are played with all stock settings (no mods), though you can pick whatever race and galaxy size, difficulty, etc, that you like. You play as normal and submit your score at the end. Based on these scores, you compete or cooperate with other players to rise individually or as a group in the rankings.

You can also visit the Core, to learn more and meet a few awesome players.

After you have your basics down, join an Empire(a group of players) to increase the fun

Kryo has pretty much hit the nail on the head. Although GalCiv2 has no real method of multiplayer competition, the metaverse is as close to this as you can get, having the scores of games you play ranked against other members. Heading to the Metaverse and the High Score section of this website will allow you to have a look at the list of players and their respective scores.

Joining an empire is also a good way to find out mroe about the metaverse and get a little more out of the game - if you want to know more about empires have a look at this post:
