creating a custom ship style

How do I go about this? I have saved several designs as templates, and they show up under the "templates" tab in the Shipyard, but when I try to create a custom ship style I cannot seem to find my designs to put them in. Is there something I'm missing here?

Make sure that you pick the same style they were made under to start customizing from, so the prefix matches. Note also that the templates will only appear as options when you pick a ship of the same size on the left.

So I've figured out how to make a new style but I can't seem to to be able to use it with my custom race. Although it appears in the menu list, the ship designs just default to the original ship style, in this case Terran. Is it simply not possible for the player to use a custom style, or is there some step involved in making it work?
