The Great Torian Alliance

How do I break them?

So here is the jist. I am currently playing a Gigantic / Painful / All in , game and am having much fun and success. However, I just entered into a part of the game that may pose more problems for me than I had originally anticipated.

There are only 6 races left including myself. The Arceans are washed up, one more war against anyone and they are done. The Thalans are pretty tough, ranking #3 in this mess. My problem lies with the Torian and their alliance. I am ranked #1 as the Yor, at this point, but not by much. The Torian are aligned with the Drath and the Altarians. I am certain that the Torian are about to start a war with me. Over the course of the last several weeks I have watched their fleets set direct courses for all 3 of my economic resource starbases. I moved large fleets of my own to counter and protect those starbases and the Torians parked their fleets next to them, as if waiting for something. This concerns me and makes me believe the Torian are thinking a preemptive strike is necessary.

All three of them are using laser tech and I have maxed out on defense against it. I know I can take on the Torian and win at this point, or I can take on both the Drath and Altarians. Mixing it up with all three, with the Drath possibly pulling the Thalans into it would spell certain doom for me. So... How can I go about breaking the Torian Alliance?

Yup. Have the Thalians go to war with the Alliance. While they are distracted, build, build, build. Upgrade your ships...

One thing to think about: As far as I know, tech trading is not effected by how they feel about you. As long as you're not actually trading warheads, you ought to be able to get technology. I'd see if the the alliance has anything you want...

Something else: Alliances are defensive only. If one part goes to war, the rest won't. Its only when you declare war on one part of the alliance that they go to war with you...

So: you may want to park fleets in orbit of all the worlds of the weakest member of the alliance, causing them to declare against you...

except if you're playing with super abilities - the drath will get everyone to go to war with you regardless, as might the altarians (i'm not sure if ther super ability is defensive).

thought 2: what about a decoy? like build a few military bases along their boarders.

thought 3: if you have a secondary weapons tech, build a bunch of ships with them, and trade them to the thalans to go to war with any member of that alliance. might be worth it even if you've only got one weapon tech.

In almost the same situation recently, I had three civs in an alliance that I had to remove. What I did was to keep the military rank higher than any single one of them. Then I took and lured the one with the lowest relations into declaring on me. Seems as long as I had the superior military ranking his buddies didn't want any part of it. After taking the first, it's a repeat process to break the last two.

Except we're not interested in the Drath or the Altarians. We're worried about the Torians. Therefore, the strategy for dealing with the Torians without dragging the Drath or Altarians into it is to let them attack you.

The Thalans and Arceans are definitely your friends here. If you can, pursue alliances with them, or turn them against the GTA so you can keep some of the heat off yourself.

If you have the cash, try to start a war between two of the alliance members. It will take a lot of money, but if you're lucky, you'll end up with the Torians alone against a Drath-Altarian alliance.

Is it okay that when you said GTA my first thought was "but this is Galciv, not Freespace!"

The Galactic Terran Alliance wasn't my first thought; I'd say as long as you don't start thinking Galciv was made by Rock Stardock and your approval ratings don't Descend of their own Volition, you're fine.

Hmm... Freespace though... (looks longingly at his Saitek X45 sitting in the corner...)

Well, if I hadn't been the one who posted it, my first thoughts would've been "Greater Toronto Area? Wah?"

So yeah, I guess its okay.
