Psycholocial need for... stuff

I know its random, but its a question I've been struggling with for a while:
what is the evolutionary psychological basis for the want of positions?
in english: why do we want stuff so bad. what makes us want STUFF!
no other creature really has "stuff" beyond mate and territory.

we are not the only mammals who gather worthless possessions i'm afraid. but what's the point in discussing this? so we can have another 3 pages of contradictions that lead to an oblivion of off topic posts?

No seriously, "stuff" is an indication of status. i.e. we can afford it. The "evolutionary psychological basis" is that those who can gather more stuff must be better and are therefore more desirable as mates.



Or it could be that we are just the only ones capable of doing it. Think about it, what other creature can make "stuff." Squirrels gather nuts and stuff and stash those away, does that count? Dogs bury bones, does that count? No other creature has access to "stuff" so they can't stockpile it.

but WHY?
thats quite obvious, but it doesnt make sense in an evolutionary definition.
