I have a question about the trails that are supposed to... well... trail behind ships in the battle viewer. Ever since the game came out I've had troubles with these showing up and while it should be no big deal... it frankly drives me insane. Something about trails behind ships (homeworld-style) conveys motion so well, and just looks so... cool, that when it doesn't work it instills a great sadness into my heart.
Anyway, back when GalCiv II first came out, I think there were just little particle "cloud cones" behind engines, and they never used to show up for me for some reason. Now, several months later, at least in the DA beta ships have much cooler, longer, hazy trails, kinda like a shorter version of the ones in Homeworld. I've seen these in screenshots posted by Brad in the example games.
Unfortunately, while the old-style trails seem to show up now, they are very small and kind of uncool compared to the new ones, and the new ones don't work for me, at least not consistently. Earlier today I was playing a game and my Large hull sized ships had the cool hazy trails in a couple of battles, while my fighters did not. Then they inexplicably stopped showing for the big ships too.
I tried playing with the "disable trails" button in the interface options, but setting it either way didn't do anything. I have all graphical bells and whistles turned on (so the "disable" options unchecked) in the graphics options, and my video card is a Radeon X1900 XTX, so I don't think there's any chance my computer couldn't handle some engine trails.
Does anyone else have a trail problem (heh)? Has anyone else had issues with trails in the past and overcome them somehow? Please help, as stupid as it sounds, this kills the battle viewer for me
