Regarding Draginol's Blog

After reading Draginol's blog regarding the 1992 democratic takeover, I find myself agreeing with him. I am a republican, but I consider myself a California Republican or what I like to call a Schwarzenegger-Republican. Thats means I'm an econimic-conservative and a socio-liberal.

Anyways, People put too much focus on politcal parties now-a-days. Especially on national elections, people forget that what really matters is the local elections which can affect our lives day by day. Sure, Bush is President or Clinton is. It really doesn't matter unless your in the military. But for us average joes, we should focus on electing good local representation. Our governor affects our life much more than our president, people forget this fact. Its what makes american republican style of government so great. We can have an idiot for president and still have a great governor and we'll be okay.

Not entirely - the favorite tactic of both sides of issues these days is to get the federal government to step in and promote their views. See abortion, gun laws, taxation, "No Child Left Behind", "Patriot" Act, etc.

Also, the national elections have a major long term effect in that Federal Judges are nominated by the Pres and confirmed (or not!) by the Senate and serve for life.

Good local representation is very important, but the framework that the states and local goverments have to work within are set by the federal government.

Usually when a political party wins the presidential elections they also get power in congress, and Congress gets quite a lot of power.

Please discuss politics on JoeUser or elsewhere rather than here--no matter how civil and well-reasoned the thread may begin, it will almost inevitably attract trolls if it continues.

That is not entirly true- Going back LBJ, the dem's controled all 3 branches- then came Nixon and Ford (have to chuckle when I think of Ford...), the Dems controled Senate and Congress then. Think Carter had dems control in both houses, (His biggest fault is he was to honest for Washington), Reagan, Bush 1 all had to deal with Dem's control. Clinton had to deal with the Republicans becuase the dem's lost control when he was president- and now Bush II is looking at having to be in the same boat. So only 3 presidents outa the last 8 have enjoyed there party in control of congress and the house for the last 42 years

I mainly agree with you and I definatly agree with the idea that there is too much emphasis on political parties.

The news has been talking about someone (Joe Liberman, I think) who is a dem, got beat in the primaries and now is ahead in the polls as an independent.

I fear the trolls.

Trolls??!! i only thought they live under bridges.. Guess Message boards have become their new homes.

It's kinda weird that no matter who's president and who's in control, no dramatic change occurs from within the country unless an external event forces it upon us. Well, not since the Civil War. Kinda gives fuel to the conspiracy theories.

We need to eliminate politicians altogether. How can a rich person even remotely begin to understand the plight of the common worker, the middle class, or the uneducated poor? And don't throw that "they're a self made person who came from poverty" crap at me because it doesn't stick. Once you pull yourself out of poverty, you never look back, no matter who you are. Politicians just take it to the next level of greed, lust, power mongering, etc. Nothing happens in this world anymore without money being a driving force. Those who have it dictate, those who don't suffer. We are the sufferer's, make no mistake about it. What CEO deserves to make millions while his average worker makes 20k, if they are lucky? Don't think that CEO isn't buying a bunch of politicians to make him even more money, more powerful? If you don't believe that I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I would love to sell you.
