Ship Repair Issue

I'm wondering if you have to be at a friendly starport or planet in order to get your damaged ships repaired. Can ships be repaired in raw space whatsoever? Is there a benefit to docking at a base or planet? Is there any change in the "rules" depending on the level of difficulty being played?

Ships repair at a constant rate, everywhere (except in orbit of a planet? Maybe?). You don't need to be in your territory or close to a planet. I don't think it changes with difficulty level.

Ships repair much faster in orbit and also will sometimes repair to better than new (original hps was 10 and was damaged to 4/10. A couple of turns at the planet it may come out at 12/10

Ships repair much faster while in orbit, as mentioned. These repairs occur in fixed increments, however.

For example, I recently had a game where my ships in orbit got 6 points back per turn. In the event that they had, for example, 120/122 health, they got 126/122 the next turn (at which point they stopped, obviously).
