Starbase Question

Bought the game and am playing my first game that has gone past 50 or so turns. It's a Gigantic Universe. I have build many starbases, with defenses, offenses. They are placed so as to try to incorporate into my boundaries as many planets as I can, both mine and other races depending on the type.

So I was attacked by a foe finally, and he floated a fleet into one of my Military Starbase spheres but didn't attack it. I launched a fleet to counter, and a battle ensued -- but no Starbase appeared in the fight! What am I missing here? Will the base only aid my fleet if THEY attack me? I'd hate this to be the case as I've spent so much capital building so many bases on the map already.

Any help would be appreciated.

The starbase offenses and defenses will only operate when the starbase itself is attacked.

For military starbases, there are starbase modules that you can build to enhance the offense/defense/speed/repair of your fleets within the sphere of operation of that starbase (the light colored area when the starbase is clicked on). In this case these enhancements will affect fleets engaged in battle

If the battle happens within the sphere of operation of multiple military starbases, the enhancements do stack.

Ah Tert...thanks so much for that....I thought that the Starbase would appear in a combat anywhere within it's sphere. Now let me ask this....if the Starbase has components to protect itself AND to provide enhancements to any fleets in the sphere...will it then appear in combat and contribute it's (Star Javelin for instance)own offensive capabilities to the battle?

No I don't think so. The starbase will simply provide enhancements.

You can view the Mil starbase as sort of a forward operating/logistics base that gives fleets its enhancements, but won't itself get into the fight unless it is attacked directly.

Another question or 3.

My autopilot seems to have "turned itself off" somehow. I have the icon selected as "on". But the autopilot is very erratic, and sometimes moves a ship a few spaces, then stops -- or doesn't move the ships at all. I can see the lines on the minimap, but they don't move by themselves. As you can imagine, this is really a problem on a Gigantic map with many ships coming online during mid game.

Another -- I've seen Minor Races being extinguished by majors (with the movie/dialogue and all), yet their planets still exist and carry the Race Flag of the Minor. What's up with that?

Lastly. If I have "Ships in Orbit" and am attacked, do they auto-launch to defend?

Forgot to mention that Rally Points doesn't seem to work either. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but if I select a Rally point to send a ship to, it never keeps moving towards it. Maybe related to the AutoPilot issue?

Starbases will only engage in combat when attacked. It is silly that a star base will ignore an enemy invasion fleet on its way to your nearby planet. It would be nice if they allowed star bases to attack ships/fleets within its area of effect; if other star bases are within range they should also join the fun.

Yes I very much agree. What is the point of a base that can't both aid local ships AND defend itself at the same time? (if the proper modules installed of course). Goes against all logic.
