Ships in service says I have an enourmous fleet

From Colony management on a world, I clicked the BuildShip button. The list of ships usually indicates in parenthesis how many of each model I currently have in service.

At that point in the game, my fleet consisted of only a flagship, and about four fighters.

That screen indicates how long (in weeks) it would take to build any of those particular ships on that world with the current production level.

Okay then, A Color Cooordinated parenthesis scheme would fix all of this.....

This screen, reached by clicking on the shipyards button, displays a count of the vessels currently in my fleet. If I choose "Obsolete" button, it then asks me something like "there are two of that kind currently in service; do you want to cash them in?"

If the first screen does indeed specify number of weeks to completion, maybe it could have "wks" included in the parenthesis, so that it's obvious.

I agree with the OP, I think the (value inside the parentheses) represents how many ships of that model are currently in active service. But i'm not totally sure since I havent played in a while.

Anyway angelwyrm, if ur sure that u only had about 5 ships in ur fleet at that time then what can i say but its probably another hard to reproduce bug. It would be better if you have savefile of that one game and verify.

It's not the needed time to build, you see the numbers also in the shipdesigner. It has something to do with the number of ships in previous games, but i'm not sure. In 1.1 it gave the current number of ships (after a couple of turns)

Ok, after going back and starting a new game, and looking closer at the two screens...

In the above screen, the selected ship's parenthetical notation exactly matches the weeks remaining. I went through the list, and they all matched.

In the shipyard, the notation matches the number of ships in each class.

Had me all because I see the shipyard screen way more often than I see the build-at-this-planet screen. Usually I use the quick build list -- an excellet feature, btw.

Why would it be any different? Personally I would be puzzled if you didn't see the number of weeks to build a ship in the Shipyard screen, and the number of each ship you have in the "Manage Ship Designs" screen.

When you are managing designs, they are not relevant to any one shipyard but to all of them, so it would be impossible to determine how long a ship would take to build. The best you could get is an average, and that is of dubious use. Far better to know how many you have in service, or nothing at all after the ship type name.

The Starport shows the number of turns to build the ship at the planet whose starport you are viewing.
The Shipyard shows the number of ships you have of that type in your empire.
