Spy Ships

In the "what are tiny ships for?" thread started by El Conquest, there is some great info on using tiny hull spy ships.

I love using these little U2 ships to keep an eye on hostile sectors, and the enemy AI HATES this.
It is a great cat and mouse game, cause I make sure I can out run their interceptors and they will
chase the spy ships all across outer space. While this is going on, I am preparing the KNOCK OUT !!!
So far I have not tried the diplomatic strat, I like to spread my Influence with Laser Tech !!!!

Later in the game I will use cargo hull spy ships with xtra engines, xtend life support and max-out sensors.
I like being able to move the "Blackbirds" to hot sectors as needed...
These types of ships can have cool visuals, the hull covered with sensor mods and bristling with antennae.

I always use tiny ships as "sensor drones". 12 parsect sensor range and extended life support system. Like the OP said, I like to make sure they have state of the art engines so that they can outrun any enemy. I'd say, throughout all of my military campaigns I lost maybe one or two sensor drones, but that was because I had that stationed too close to a hostile planet and they were taken out in a hit-and-run mission from the planets orbital fleet.

If you get the Eyes of the Universe wonder fairly quickly (say, in the first year and a half), little ships can be outfitted solely with engines and support, and sent out to keep an eye on enemy troop movements and development, with no extra sensors necessary.

Or you can just build strong fighters and have them serve as pickets...

Bad tactic. Concentrating your forces into fleets guarantees victory when a dispersed force would be annihilated. It is far more cost effective to use scouts for scouting and fighters for butt-kicking.

Not necessarily: Several times I have been attacked by unguarded troop transports en route to my planets. Having a light security force distributed across the empire forces the enemy to provide substantial escourt to an invasion force, or face expensive consequences.

And presumably they're not the only defense. If combined with strong defense forces this gives him a sort defense in depth strategy.
