The Second Drengin-Terran War -- Military History

the first engagement: Battle Group 3 meets the new Imperial Drengin Navy

What follows is a little fictive narrative of a battle between the Drengins and Terran Starfleet forces. I found Suralle's stories of his Kat Lords and their exploits rather entertaining, so I endeavored to write something similar - something that did not feature his imagined Terran-Yor alliance (perish the thought). Anyway, this is what happened:

This is Norrington. TSS Dauntless and the Bellicose have completed our patrol of The Void. There are no indications of any Drengin activity in the vicinity. We encountered only two vessels, as expected: a Torian merchant courier bound for Mars on approved trade route 5, and the colony ship TSS Hestia on her way to New California with more settlers. Sensor sweeps of the sector reveal no tactical targets, but have returned anomalous readings from a small debris field. I recommend that a survey ship be dispatched. Nothing further to report at this time, Admiral. Norrington out.

Norrington here. An ensign on the Dauntless reported that he “thinks” he saw a tactical target appear on his duty-station’s monitor. Captain Sweeny briefly issued an all-stop order, but the supervising lieutenant in the sensor room could not corroborate the sighting. Sweeny dismissed the incident and ordered her ship to rejoin the Bellicose. I respect Sweeny’s judgment, but have decided to have TSS Resolute rendezvous with us, and together we will investigate further. TSS Valiant will maintain her position and look after the unarmed freighter Hermes and the TSS Hephaestus deep-space constructor. Three cruisers should be able to handle anything we find, and at least one warship should guard the Hephaestus, and comfort the civies on the freighter. What is that? Tactical target indicated, but no ID yet. Admiral, I’ll have to get back to you. Out.

This is Norrington. The sensor shadow has disappeared again. We haven’t found anything, and the mysterious target is as yet unidentified. It appears I’ve got three Terran Starfleet cruisers chasing after sensor ghosts. I’m going to order the Dauntless and the Resolute back to their original positions, and I repeat my recommendation that a survey ship be sent to this sector ASAP. Until we get some answers, I [static]

[static] is Norrington. [static] came out of nowhere. There was no warning. Six Drengin fighter craft, outfitted with some kind of directed-energy beam weapons. They managed to inflict a fair amount of damage to the Bellicose before [static] Resolute could train her guns on them. It’s impossible to tell whether they were an overzealous patrol or a vanguard flight of an invasion force. [static] Resolute and Dauntless to rejoin the Valiant at flank speed. Bellicose will have to follow at three-quarters. The safety of the Hephaestus is paramount. Apparently, the Drengin have been very busy on their side of The Void. Their weapons were exponentially more powerful than any laser I’ve ever seen, and they were slicing through my ship before I could even call general quarters. I recommend placing the entire fleet on Defense Condition Red, until the nature of the threat can be assessed. [static] I have to see to these repairs. Reports as warranted. Norrington out.

Captain William Norrington, reporting in. The Bellicose has sustained major damage, and her structural integrity has been compromised. Damage control teams are still fighting a plasma fire aft of the starboard power plant that broke out just after the first fighters attacked, but communications and limited sensors have been restored. The Valiant and the Dauntless are gone, and the Resolute is dead in space. Three Irascible-class patrol craft have shown up, I assume under your orders. Thank you. I have them helping Captain Marquez evacuate the Hermes survivors onto Resolute, while his engineers try to restore main power. Some unrecognizable slag and a few mangled support beams are all that remains of TSS Hephaestus. Something else: some of the wreckage in the debris field has been positively identified as part of the habitat ring of the TSS Hestia. The colony on New California needs to be apprised. If the colony is still there. This is a dark day for Starfleet, Admiral. Any more help you can divert to us would be greatly appreciated, but I know the priority must be to scramble combat ships to the Sol system. As for what’s facing you, the enemy fleet size and strength is unknown, but at least 5 behemoths that looked like they could be new-generation troop transports were sighted before sensors went out. With these new beam weapons of theirs it’s going to be hard to force an intercept. Good luck, Admiral. The Bellicose will hold position and commence field repairs. As soon as the Resolute restores power and we get our engines back, we’ll make for Earth at best possible speed. Give ‘em hell, sir. Norrington out.

Lieutenant Adrianna Hyksos stared blankly at her monitor. The elegant dance of Jupiter’s many moons as they circled the gaseous giant made for a spectacular scene. A spectacular scene that Hyksos had seen over and over for the past 2 weeks. With a sigh, she brought up another beautiful image: this time the rings of Saturn were diffracting the Sun’s rays into gorgeous patterns of oranges and yellows. Patterns which the lieutenant found all too familiar. Disgusted, she punched the control panel, and a much different picture appeared. “Finally,” she muttered to herself. The lieutenant had tapped into an optical sensor scope that she hadn’t seen before, a scope embedded on the surface of one of the larger rocks in the Asteroid Belt. The frame seemed to pitch wildly, as the rock spun through space and collided with its smaller cousins. “Not much to see, but at least there’s some variety,” she thought to herself, and then, aloud, “Come on, gotta wake up Adrianna.” Hyksos willed herself to sit up; she had been slumped over her desk for what seemed like hours. Groggily, she glanced at the chronometer: 0238 hours, PST… way too early to message her mother in San Francisco, and Lieutenant Mason didn’t take over and start his watch for another six and a half hours. The communications relay station was silent – Hyksos couldn’t even hear Mason’s snoring through the closed hatch. She allowed her eyes to close, and let her mind wander...

Without warning the lieutenant’s peaceful musings were interrupted by the deafening blare of the alert klaxon. “Damn, damn, frackin’ thing!,” she yelled, as she struggled to mute the offending siren. Just as she cut the sound, the hatch screeched open, and Donald Mason stumbled in. “What?... What’s?... What the hell is going on?” “Shut up, Donny, I don’t know yet,” Hyksos snapped. She accessed the communiqué that had set off the alarm, and began to read it aloud for Mason’s benefit:

“From TSS Bellicose to all Terran Starfleet vessels and installations…”

Hyksos stopped reciting. Mason impatiently gestured for her to continue, but all she could do was input the voice playback command. The speakers crackled to life:

“…licose to any Terran Starfleet vessel. Mayday, mayday, mayday. Drengin invasion fleet has breached [static] border at coordinates 56 [static] dash 178. TSS Valiant destroyed. TSS Dauntless destroyed. TSS Resolute heavily damaged. TSS Hephaestus destroyed. TSS Hermes [static] heavy casualties. Repeat: this is a general distress call from the TSS Bellicose to any [static]fleet vessel. Mayday, mayday, mayday. Drengin invasion fleet has [static]”

and then, the dispassionate vocalization of the computer: “Transmission ended…”

Mason and Hyksos looked at each other, and without a word they took their stations to make sure the message was being routed properly through the TS CommNet.
