This isn't true, though. I switch my weapon research path at least once almost every game (unless I'm rushing). When the terrans got 40-beam, 80-shield battleships to counter my psyonic beam, I researched up to psyonic missile and built a new generation of ships. Huge difference: instead of 80 defense, now the most they could block was 7 damage. There's a big enough incentive to switch in situations like this... There's nothing broken with this part of the game, I think
