Multi weapon combat

how does it work?

OK, the manual says that if you have the "right" defense for a particular weapon (chaff for missle, armor for mass driver, etc.), it is counted at full value. If you have the wrong defense, the sqaure root is used. However, it also says that all attack factors are added together and fired as a single shot. So . . . let's say my ship has Attack 1 Laser and Attack 9 Missle, and fires at a ship with Defense 9 Shield. Does that mean my attack of 10 is against a defense of 3 (because of my missle) or 9 (beacuse there's that 1 point of Laser as well)?

Each attack type is counted as a seperate roll internally (though they are combined in the battle viewer).

For example, a ship with 10 Beams and 6 Missiles against a ship with 4 Shields and 9 Armor would roll like so:

0 to 10 attack - vs - 0 to (4+3) defense (armor is taken at the square root of its value since it is non-optimal)
0 to 6 attack - vs - 0 to (2+3) defense (both are taken at square root since neither is optimal vs missile)

The resulting damage (if any) is combined and displayed.

Because it works this way, splitting weapon types is not very effective at low levels because the extra defense rolls can reduce your overall damage. At higher values though it can be useful since high defenses lose a much more significant portion to the square root peration.
