Since installing the Beta 1.1 patch, I have very rarely experienced a CTD during planetary invasions. My screen goes black, flickers a bunch of times, and crashes to desktop. I'm able to see a small area around my cursor, and I've noticed that things still progress in the background before the crash. This has been extremely rare and only seems to happen after I've been playing 3+ hours (which is more often than my wife would like).
So last night I managed to click Attack, Skip, and Done on the invasion screen during the flicker but before the CTD occured. This allowed me to continue and the game ran nice and smooth for the rest of the night. However, from that point on, the planet view of the invasion screen (where it shows you all the structures on the planet during ground combat), there was nothing but white squares.
Given this, I'm thinking the flicker and crash is directly related to that structure view on the invasion screen. Perhaps a specific structure, or the resizing of the structures on the screen in general. Whatever it is, the whitening of that screen allowed me to play for the rest of the night without so much as a stutter during invasions.
