Seeing how the community feels that the game has a lot of fuzzy math and that the developers are willing to listen to ideas, I have one that I would like to put forward concerning population.
It would be set up like a tooltip
When you hover your mouse cursor over the planet's pq in the planet view, the tooltip would pop up saying
The max population this planet can hold is ####
If taxes and morale dont change, the max population is #### with an approval rating of ##.
The first sentence would give the max pop based on pq.
The second sentence would give the max pop at the current taxation and morale, either showing the max where population growth stops or the approval when popluation hits the pq max. This shouldn't take into account food production, its just a theoretical max.
A ficticious example would be earth is pq 10. I hover my mouse over the number, and the tooltip tells me the max population is 12 billion and with my current settings I can reach 9 billion. I then build an entertainment network, which shows that my new max will be 12 billion with an approval rating of 55%.
I'm not going to pretend that I know how to program this or anything but I think that this would be very useful to the player and be unobtrusive.
