Defensive Bonus from Starbases

If I build a Starbase with for example Protective fields (+1 to all defenses for ships) it will only apply to ships with at least 1 point in defense, doesnt matter in which category. Ships with no defense rating at all, wont get the bonus.

My question is, is this a feature, a bug or am I messing something up?

I got confused about it first time too. I think its bit weird that your ship needs to have atleast somekinda defence to get the bonuses

I think it makes perfect sense. Otherswise you could end up with a fleet of unarmed freighters kicking everyones ass.

I, too, think this is logically sound. Think of it as a multiplier instead of an addition (I'm sure there's some mathematician who can do it for you). You can't add a multiplier to a value of 0 and come up positive. What good is a super running shoe for a man with no legs? Give him legs and he can take advantage of them shoes, a-yuh.

I also exploit Starbases in my game like no other. Get minaturization high enough where you can put weapons and at least a single point of defense on a tiny hull, and with enough starbases, you can pump out some serious light fighters.

Well as the upgrades are discribed it doesn't make sense but from a practical stand point it could I suppose.
