That'll get the helmsman fired. Although aside from the minor issue of killing untold civilians on the planet, it might be rather useful. Just think, no need to worry about range issues. And you get to use the planet and its civilians as a human shield. Much better than the "You wouldn't shoot at a spaceship with glasses, would you?" defense.
