Question about production/research

Is this changed?

I reread the manual and I noticed something. In galciv1 when you built manufacturing or research buildings part of the bonus production was taxfree...every 3rd industrial production was a freebie and every 2nd research was a freebie. The devs said they did this to reward players for building industrial buildings and to not break the science starbase resource.

The manual didn't state this so I assume it got taken out...why?

What the point of building mines/labs now if all it does is let you spend more money and why would anyone use the science resource if its going to bankrupt you?. This also makes the federalist party seem stronger then the industrialists because the feds give $$$ but the industrialists just increase your production base without reward (that is, you have to pay for it).

Not exactly sure what you mean by tax free and freebies in GC1 so my comment may not answer your question.

Anyway....

I think that the big difference in GC2 and GC1is that less was often better in GC! some of the improvements were just too costly to ever make sense in a high difficulty game, even for the most skillful player. There may have been some bonuses included to make up for this.

In GC2 every improvement has at least a potential benefit if it is built at the right place at the right time. To get that benefit you must create revenue by carefully increasing population and thereby increasing tax revenue. Establish trade routes and promote tourism through diplomacy.

The improvements don't create revenue, they inhance revenue and multiply your ability to utilize revenue

Well yeah in a sense I agree with that. I would say they 'streamlined' the improvements along with the tech tree. You still have plenty of choices. You also have a governor, who can upgrade your tiles automatically so if you learn how to build more efficient factories you don't have to worry about micro managing every single planet.

Which I think that the AI is also very competent at building improvements and using them to their advantage.
