Humans disadvantaged?

Hi,

The manual states that the humans do not start the game knowing where all the stars and stuff are, but all the other races do (like GalCiv1). My question is whether this just plain disadvantages the humans compared to the other races, or do they get something else extra to kind of balance this disadvantage out?

Also, for people who LIKE having to explore the map even though it may be something of a disadvantage, is there a way to turn off knowing where stars are to necessitate exploring with the non-human races if you want to?

From what I have read, most, if not all non Terran races start with Stellar Cartography. This means that they know where planets are but they still need to explore them to find out their PQ. Terrans don't start with Stellar Cart. As for exploring.... everyone has to explore the map, as in clear the fog of war.

As I understand it the major races are all equivalent in game balance terms. So while Terrans miss out on stellar cartography they gain in other areas to compensate.

I think I saw a post by frogboy telling that the Ai did no longer know where the good planets are, so they must search the map as well (they might know where the yellow stars are though)

Every race knows where stars are. Stellar cartography only allows to know the number of planet orbiting each star. But lots of planest are unsuable (PQ 0) and you can't colonize them.

As for the FoW, the AI must deal with it. But some races are more adavantaged than the others if they have a bigger sensor bonus (Torians for example).

It's been said before, but the manual is out of date in this regard. The AI no longer has this advantage.

The Torians no longer have their uber sensor bonus... Brad said he took it out. *cry*

You dont need Stellar Cartography, really... you know where the stars are at (minimap filter), so you know where the planets are at.

I just want to make sure the other races don't know before hand where the resources are. It was annoying in GC1 finding all those constructors bee-lining to the nearest resources when I was still exploring. arrrgh

You will see that from time to time...sometimes the AIs focus heavily on constructor production...

The minor races will tend to piss you off too, since they dont colonize, all they do is hunt down resources. An annoyance I hope Brad will tend to at some point.

No one knows where the resources are. Peace Phoenix is right. They know where the planets are but in GC 1 they knew which were good. In GC2 they have no clue. They still have to explore like the humans to find out if they are worth colonizing. If you really want to start with stellar cartography then play as one of the other races or create a custom race and give them the tech stellar cartography to start off with. Everyone knows where the stars are regardless of the stellar cartography tech, including the humans.
