THE TERRAN REPUBLIC: A STORY

Copernicus Database: Formation of the Terran Republic

The foundation for the modern Terran Republic was laid in 2156. The United Nations had been gradually gaining more power over individual nations. On January 1st 2156 the Secretary-General dissolved all nations. This decision was met with heavy resistance from both the governments of the nations and the UN council. The Secretary General announced that any country that disobeyed the decision would be occupied by UN forces. He also dissolved the UN council and proclaimed himself Emperor of the Terran Empire. Needles to say, many nations refused UN domination; unfortunately they were speedily conquered by Terran Empire Forces who were mostly made up of mercenaries. The Terran Empire now dominated the globe.

The Terran Empire was running out of metals by the late 2170’s. Recycling was not enough to replace the metals lost in battle, so the Emperor signed the Sol Mining Charter. This charter ordered the construction of the Terran Starport in the deserts of New Mexico. By January 1st, 2183 the Starport was built and had begun construction on a new vessel called the Spacerock. By 2200 the Spacerock and three other mining vessels had been launched from Earth. These vessels were sent to mine the asteroids, the Moon, and Mars. Armstrong City was established on the Moon as a base for mining operations and an imperial research facility. No base was established on Mars, however, because of its climate and atmosphere.

With the metal shortage taken care of the Emperor turned his eyes to space. He signed the Interstellar Charter on August 1st, 2205. This charter commanded the Imperial Research Bureau to begin work on an engine to get humans to another star system. This charter also allocated resources for the expansion of Armstrong City and the Construction of Starian City, named after the Emperor. It was the biggest reason for early moon settlement.

On January 1st, 2223 the Bureau announced the completion of a prototype engine called hyperdrive. However, the Empire would never put this engine into use. On January 5th, 2223 rebellions all over the globe caused the collapse of the Empire. The Terran Republic came into being on January 4th, 2224, the date of the signing of the Republic Charter. Earth and Luna were now unified under one government. This was a great help when the Republic began construction of two new vessels equipped with hyperdrive. These vessels were the R.S.S. (Republic Star Ship) Copernicus and a Mayflower class colony ship. The Copernicus was to be the flagship of the newly created Terran Republic Navy. It would seek out new worlds to colonize, new life and new civilizations, and it would boldly go where no man had gone before. The ships were completed in under a year and scheduled to be launched on January 1st, 2225.

Chapter 1: Where No Man Has Gone Before

President Alan Bradley of the Terran Republic was looking out the observation window in the Guest Lounge on Space Station 1 in orbit around Earth. He saw the Copernicus detach from the station and he saw the hyperdrive engines slowly come to life. When the engines were fully activated and the ship had started to move off he turned to the reporters and dignitaries in the lounge. “This ship will use its new hyperdrive engines to go to the Martin system and then to the Russom system. After reaching Russom the captain of the Copernicus, Jonathan Archer, will choose where to head to,” he said, “Any questions?” He randomly selected a reporter from the sea of raised hands, “You, the reporter from the Terran News Network.”

“Mr. President,” said the reporter “is it true that this ship carries NO weapons whatsoever?”

“Very true,” he replied, “ that is because we want any aliens we might meet to think of us as a peaceful race. Are there any more questions? You in the red.”

“Sir, doesn’t the ship carry two dozen Terran Defense Marines?”

“Yes it does, to defend against any potential boarding parties, just in case. Anyone else?”

After answering many questions President Bradley retired to his office on Terran Orbital Station One. He was glad to hear that the first Mayflower colony ship had launched from Luna with five hundred thousand colonists on board. He was also pleased to hear that construction had been completed on Mars City, humanity’s first permanent settlement on Mars. Today was a great step forward for humanity. He vowed that for the rest of his term as president he would help humanity move forward in the galaxy.

Jonathan Archer was on the bridge of the Copernicus as it entered the Martin system. He couldn’t believe that he was finally entering an alien system! What a thrill! All of a sudden his sensor officer said, tentatively, “Captain, I think you should see this.”

“Put it on the view screen.”

“Aye sir.”

Captain Archer watched as an image appeared on the main view screen. It was a ship! Or, the leftovers of one. “Bring the wreckage onboard mister Varan and tell engineering to take a look at it.”

“Aye sir,” the sensor officer replied.

Two hours later the Chief Engineer said over the com to the captain, “Captain, the wreckage contains Durathanium, the most valuable metal in the Republic! If you’ll let me I could use this to make the hull of the Copernicus 20% stronger!”

“You have my permission Commander Halberg,” said Captain Archer, “We’ll need all the protection we can get out here.”

Sorry about the short lenghth of the chapters, i'm not much good at long stories. Anyway, I decided to post early. I think I should have chapters 4 and 5 ready and posted by Friday, next week.

Chapter 2: Persistence and Reward

Copernicus Database

In the beginning the Terran Republic was discouraged as system after system turned out to be a dud with no habitable planets. People began to wonder it there was life in the galaxy at all, besides Humans. After 3 months of disappointment an amazing discovery was made by the crew of a colony ship, the Hatch System! With three habitable planets it was an oddball in the galaxy, even in 2226, however a new age had begun for humans. Colonization! Overall, 5 planets were colonized by the Republic during 2225. This presented a new challenge to the Republic, how to govern these colonies. With the oppression of the Empire still fresh in humanity’s collective consciousness the debate began.

Chapter 3: Debate and Solution

“The chair recognizes President Alan Bradley of the Terran Republic, consisting of Terra and Luna.”

“Thank you, dignitaries, honored guests, and senators,” said the president as he stepped onto the stage, “We are gathered here today to decide how Terra and its colonies will be governed. There are those in the Senate who believe we should govern Humanity in a way similar to the United Nations of ancient Terra. I think this would be a horrible way to govern us. The UN of old was a weak organization, but its leaders abused their power. This is likely to happen again if we use this form of government. I suggest we use a system where each planet in the Terran Republic has a provincial government of their choosing, there should be some restrictions, and those governments report to the Terran Interstellar Government. The Terran Interstellar Government would use a system similar to that of the ancient United States for election and government. The Terran Interstellar Government would consist of the Terran High Court, the Terran Senate, and the Terran Presidency. These would serve the functions of the Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branches of the ancient US government, respectively. Thank you.”

After many speeches a great debate began. It soon became clear that the majority of the colonies and Terra supported Bradley’s idea. A vote was taken and his idea won by a landslide. The government challenge was finally over.

Copernicus Historical Database: First Contact

The Thalan Empire was contacted on June 1st, 2225 when their flagship neared a colony ship headed for the Hoth System. The Thalan Empire was soon found to have a colony in a system adjacent to the Sol System. There was a Great Panic throughout the Republic when the news was published; there was a colony near the Terran capitol! The intentions of this empire were unknown and this was a great cause of concern for the President. He immediately ordered the fleet yards on Earth and Mars to construct a squadron of the new Wasp fighters. When completed these fighters were deployed to the Thalan border. However, it soon became apparent that the fear of attack was completely unfounded. The Thalan Empire quickly reached the “Friendly” level in diplomatic relations with the Terran Republic. Fighter Squadron 1 was relocated immediately to the border with the Yor Collective, a race of sentient machines.

Chapter 4: Yor War and Altarian Defeat

Copernicus Historical Database: Yor War and the Beginning of Altarian War

The Terran Republic of 2227 found itself sharing a border with the despised Yor Collective. Most Terrans were disgusted by these artificial monstrosities. This was motivation enough for the Terran Republic to begin to draw up plans for an invasion. President Bradley instructed the Terran Starport to begin construction on Okinawa-Class troop transports so that the Republic would be ready to invade the Yor when the time came. To prepare for the invasion two new classes of ships were unveiled by the Terran Republic Navy, the Hornet fighter and the Escort-Class medium capitol ship. These would serve as the defenders of the invasion fleets and would mop up any Yor resistance. The Terran Marine Core was transferred to the Navy, they would be in charge of conquering alien worlds. The Terran Republic Navy also created a new department, Terran Starfleet. Starfleet would control all fighting and exploration vessels. The Marine Core would control all transport ships. The Navy would coordinate the two. Transports were constructed on Earth quickly, and when launched they each carried one billion Terran Marines. War was delayed, however, because Starfleet wanted time to develop two new medium capitol ships.

On April 8th, 2228 the Intrepid-Class and NX-class starships were unveiled by Starfleet. These vessels were much more powerful than the Wasp fighter and a lot more durable, as well. The prototype of the NX was christened the RSS Enterprise and the Intrepid prototype, the RSS Voyager. These vessels would become the backbone of the Terran Navy in years to come.

The Republic was finally ready to go to war. The Yor-controlled planet of Iconia V was invaded on the 15th of October. The invasion took a full week but was unsuccessful. However, another transport was already on the way. The war was destined to be short, however. On November the 8th, the Yor Collective surrendered to the previously unknown Altarian Republic. They were located many sectors away from the Terrans.

Alan Bradley couldn’t believe the report in his hand. According to this, the Terran-Yor war had only lasted three weeks, and the only losses the Republic had suffered were three wasp fighters and two and a half billion troops! Wait…he HAD to remember to stop referring to the Terran Republic as THE Republic. The Altarians were a Republic too. Well anyway, the war was over! The Senate declared that there would be a three week celebration and that a memorial would be dedicated to the soldiers that lost their lives in the conflict.

On the first of January, 2229 the Altarian Republic attacked the Terran Republic. This attack was completely unexpected and the Altarians managed to break through the Terran Perimeter that was guarding the former Yor-Terran border. There were many ships leftover from the Terran-Yor war. They were scrambled into service and their crews had minimal briefing.
