Battle Damage Question

Help

Help me to understand this:

Thalens had ships with 9 Beam attack and 0 defenses of any kind.

I had ships with 10 mass driver attack and 14 shield defense.

The Thalen ships were destroying my ships without taking hardly any damage at all. How is this possible? Am I missing something?

Unfortunately you didn't mention the fleets so the only thing that comes to my mind is a fleet of Thalan ships atacking one of your ships.

Another idea would be a first strike module and if they had enough attack, none of your ships would survive the first strike and fire back.

I think you're right. It seems to be because they had a large fleet.

Seems kinda cheap though, since I could see their ships taking hits but no damage occurring even though they had no defense whatsoever.

It could have been bad rolls on your part (a weapon can actually roll zero, if memory serves), but it's more likely a combination of bad rolls and firepower being distributed throughout your fleet. Again, you don't mention the general fleet composition on either side, and in light of that firepower numbers aren't that helpful.

For instance there's a big difference between my fielding a fleet of 10 ships with a combined 10 mass driver attack and 14 shield defense as opposed to a single ship with 10 mass driver attack and 14 shield defense by itself.

Another thing to look for is see if they had any military starbases in the area that were supporting their ships via assist modules-at least one other person reported being unable to see the improvement to the ships in the ship stats, but noticed the difference in combat. Granted, others were unable to reproduce it, but you may have just done so.

I got a couple of good reasons why you got your ass whooped.

1) Did you search their empire or somewhere close to their empire for Weapons resource mining starbases? they easily improve the weapons of all ships in an empire and if they got it maxed then you would be having difficulty.

2) Are you engaing them in 1 impaticult area? if so then try scouting out for a millitary starbase. it will improve their ships defence and attack.

3) There is a 3rd variable apart from weapons and defences, Hit points. galactic wonders, X. hull plating, Abilities, anomilies, planet improvements + more can affect HP along with defence and weapons sometimes.

4) experience and lvl's of your ships compared to the enemy ships might be quiet low. therefor your enemies ships would have the upper hand in combat with my battle experience.
