Tech Trade

If I trade techs and receive other civs unique techs, can I use them and get all of their bonuses (inklusive new planetary improvements) although they don´t exists in my tech tree ?

Also, what does the * sign mean before the technology in the negotiation sceen ?

Yes you can use everything of a traded tech and the * means that this is a unique tech, which could only be researched by a single race.
