Twilight hard locks after random time intervals

I was hoping to get some insight on a frustrating problem with GalCiv 2. I recently purchased Twilight and decided to go back through the entire campain, starting with Dread Lords. I've had problems with hard locks in Dark Avatar and Twilight, but had no such problem in Dread Lords.

I'll be blissfully playing and seemingly at random (only in DA and TotA), my entire rig will lock up completely with a high pitched whine coming from the speakers.

I don't have this problem in any other games I play and I'm a pretty avid gamer across many genres, so I'm baffled as to what could be causing this. I plan on trying some troubleshooting (like disabling SLI - is it a problem with GalCiv?), but wanted to post my debug.err just in case something screams "problems" to one of you.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm a big philosophical supporter of the way Stardock and allies (Ironclad for one) do business. This one is frustrating, however, because I just want to enjoy this rockin game! 8)

It was in the past, though I'm not sure how it is right now.

If the entire system is locking though, it's more likely a system issue than one particular to the game. If you check the Event log under Admin Tools in Control panel, are there any errors listed at the time it locks?

I checked the Event log and only have one error, but it's related to a time synching problem with the Windows clock. I have no other errors listed at all.

I built my current computer in early spring, and it's been fine for marathon sessions of all kinds of games, except for this problem (and one other with Titan Quest - see below).

One thing I did think of after I posted last: I had this exact same lockup problem with GalCiv2 last winter with my previous machine but didn't look into it too carefully, as I was going to replace it anyway. The old machine was AMD and this new one Intel based so I've seen this problem with both camps. The only piece of hardware remaining from that previous machine is the sound card. It's a direct transfer to this new machine. Are there any known issues with the X-Fi series cards and GalCiv2? I haven't seen much evidence on the forums. I'm running XP so no Alchemy to worry about in this case.

Another idea. Does GalCiv2 use more than one processor core? I did have a temporary problem with Titan Quest where it would crash to the desktop unless I set the affinity to one core. Once done, it will run seemingly forever. I figured that wasn't a problem, because it doesn't really use more than one anyway.
