Help with creating a multi purpose shield

Trying to add in a new multi-purpose shield that would protect from beam, missile, and mass driver weapons. The balancing will be very tricky, but I think that I've got that mapped out pretty well. However, so far I have been unable to get the shield to protect against all three classes of weapons. Basicly, I have been into the GCII Types.xml and changing the class for the new shield. When adding say, , it always shows as armor. Would anyone have any suggestions please?

My suggestion is to stop trying, because it can't be done.

A defense can only be assigned to a single catagory.

In twilight of the arnor you can create custom modules that add hp to ships. name one "shield matrix" and there you go. in DA or DL its not possible.

Well certainly wasn't the news that I had hoped to hear. None the less, thanks for the feed back. No use in beating a dead horse as they say.

Also ... I read somewhere that one defense help against all attack types at (square root of protection) level.

That is to say, if you have a ship with shields 4, it already (by default) protects with a value of 2 against missiles and massdrivers. And if you've got shields 9, it protects with a value of 3 against missiles and massdrivers.

I read it in a thread about a combat sim I think.
