Dread Lords Strategies?

Good day to you all.

I was recently able to pick up The Dread Lords second-hand(Though the CD within was entirely new, oddly enough:fully wrapped, Serial number in place on the wrapping....only the box showed wear.)

Now, looking around here, I'm finding many of the strategy posts here are for the expansion 'Dark Avatar'(Which I'm not even sure was released as a seperate game-That is, outside of a collection/compilation-in the U.K). Makes finding effective strategies difficult-almost everything mentions things that I simply do not have access to. It doesn't help matters that I'm an utter beginner at this sort of thing: Though I enjoyed GalCiv 1, I never got so far in terms of difficulty.

Is there any advice that can be given out? Version is 1.4.

You might want to wait for Mumblefratz, he's one of the few still playing 1.4 exclusively.

One of the major differences (more or less the only one I do remember) is the combat model, where in DL lots of smaller ships were more effective against single large enemies.

While the newer threads deal with the expansion packs, there are older threads for DL. Also, most of the information on the Wiki site is for DL. If you were able to register your serial number you can download the latest patch for DL. You can also purchase and download the expansion packs online. Big changes are the colony rush - DL doesn't have extreme planets that require research before they can be colonized. As mentioned the combat model has also changed. Ships can engage multiple targets until all their weapons have been fired so swarms of small fighters are much less effective against a capital ship. Espionage model has also changed.

Not an option: Home's connection is too slow(And the computer that's connected is not the one I play on), and I've no idea how big the things are(USB Drives are only so big, and I'm not convinced even 2 GB would be enough, assuming you can even download TO a USB Drive-with apparently the need for Stardock Central, I'm not convinced it'd be allowed). In addition, I'd have to do so via a Net cafe-not too safe.

Each expansion is below 500MB, so it should fit nicely on common USB sticks.

The point Pndrev makes is accurate. The biggest change is probably the fact that in DA each weapon can fire separately whereas in DL all weapons only fired at a single opponent. This means that in DL the small fighter with low hitpoints but decent attack along with many ships in the fleet due to high logistics could easily wipe out fleets of battleships. I don't totally believe that this totally eliminates the power of swarms of small fighters but it certainly does reduce their effectiveness.

Other than that another big difference is the reduction of the colony module to 250 from 500. Also income has been reduced somewhat in DA. I assume that both of these changes make DA a bit more difficult to get your ecomony started.

The other big difference is the overall reduction in ship speed in DA due to larger and more expensive engines. Although my biggest concern about ship speed is related to issues with ships losing their autopilot destination. That is supposedly at least improved if not fixed in DA and if so an overall speed reduction doesn't make that big a deal.

But all in all the big picture strategies are probably not all that different.

DA hasn't made small fighters entirely useless? Against the Dread Lords at least, the tie rule generally kills a swarm of fighters while the Dread survives with 1 hp. They are still highly useful in sniping the Dreads' Transports, however, but this is not front line combat and is instead a point-interceptor role.
