I'm sorry I misunderstood your post about the battle/selection bug. Does this happen with every battle? Do you have any saved games that reproduce the bug? If so, please zip them and send them to gc2bugs@stardock.com with a description of the problem.
Or are there any steps I can take to reproduce it? What ships were involved? Does it only happen for fleets? What battle options do you have enabled at the time it happens?

I believe this is another species of the missing turn button bug. Many times, it will manifest itself along with a missing turn button, which seems to me to be the game having one or more of several conflicts that cause it not to fully process a turn change and thus become stuck, including pathfinding problems. I've reported this one before and sent in saved games etc.
The problem is that when one saves the game it often seems to resolve the problem, at least for a few turns. That is especially true with this particular species. Thus, when one sends in a saved game to you all, it may often appear to you at first blush that there is no problem just looking at the saved game. I've often encountered it with pirates that appear when an evil empire surrenders or is otherwise defeated. You attack a pirate fleet or ship and the game simply becomes unresponive except for the offscreen menu options and the ability to save. If one saves, exits the game, and comes back into the game, this particular species of the problem often goes away, but just as often it is only gone until the next attack or the next few attacks at which time the game becomes unresponsive again. I just have no clue what is causing this to be able to describe the problem to you. Some have even associated it with the weapons techs that seem to have no graphics, which I've also encountered. To this day I will often "see" weapons being fired that have no graphic but are otherwise fully functional, including doomrays, disruptors, scatterblasters and nightmare torpedos. I have no idea if the problem is related to this, but I can say that I've experienced it when those weapons were not involved.
Other versions of this bug (or what I believe to be other versions) involve an AI ship attempting to enter one of the player's planets and thus "hanging" the turn and causing the rest of the game to become unresponsive. I reported that one just the other day and sent in saved game files. I believe that aspect of this bug was resolved if I interpreted Cari's posts correctly. I confirmed the bug to myself by buying the AI ship that seemed to be causing the problem, countermanding its orders trying to cause it to fly into my planet, and the hung turn immediately processed and the game went on normally from there. I've seen this happen with my own ships when I'm exploring and have inadvertently ordered them to fly into the same square as a sun or planet. Usually the game resolves these conflicts but sometimes not and I'm forced to track down the offending ship and change its orders to allow the game to proceed.
In a previous version, I had the game hang up and become unresponsive like this when a Torian fleet attempted to attack one of mine in violation of the UP nonaggression rule requiring everyone to wait one turn after war breaks out. The game could not resolve that conflict and thus the turn change would not fully resolve, the button did not reappear and the game became unresponsive, just like with this "fleet battle" version the previous poster was reporting. I believe Cari resolved that particular species of this bug.
In any event, as you can see there appear to be several problems causing or potentially causing this "hung turn change/disappearing turn button/game unresponsive bug." I'm no programmer and do not know they are all in fact species of the same bug, but it certainly appears that way to me.
