Orbiting Planets to Hold Them

Is it possible to have a non-colony ship (that can't be upgraded to a colony ship) occupy the space of a planet and stay there orbiting the planet to keep a neighbor from colonizing the planet?
Please reply before I play six more turns. (Just kidding,)

No, you can't orbit planets that you don't own. You can still use ships to get in your opponent's way, but you can't completely block them unless you have eight ships surrounding the planet.

Yes, it's called a fighter. You shoot down the other guy's colony ships with it.

Being able to just lay claim to planets without colonizing would pretty much break the game.

A empty colony ship can colonize a planet if that helps. Just build a tiny or small hulled ship (whatever your non colony ship is your referring to) and cram a colony module on it. No engines, you wont need them. Then upgrade that ship to the new small colony ship and take the planet.

Provided you can fit a colony module on the same sized hull.
