Auto-upgrade obsolete/old buildings question

So, I play gold edition, no downloaded updates (gonna get used to the game first), and I noticed a peculiar inconsistency, and im unsure of how to approach a solution.

I notice no matter what, my factories type buildings always auto upgrade, as do my farms, apparently, but my influence and research buildings do not.

Though sometimes i think they do, Im not sure. (im playing grossly huge games with lots of planets to just get used to having to manage my colonies, so It's hard to tell).

Is there a setting to just, auto-upgrade all buildings when available? Do I have to do it planet by planet?

Just wondering, I noticed im losing significant portions of research and influence in my current game, and im prepping for war so, would be rather useful.

I am noticing this when i start to get soil and habitat upgrades to free up new tiles. Maybe my inconsistency or confusion is caused because upgrades cease when new tiles become open? then resume after all the open tiles are filled? My colonies have auto-upgrade checked, im just confused as to how this system works.

The default is for all buildings to autoupgrade to the best version available. Whenever a new building type becomes available, it simply changes whatever buildings of the old type that were in the queue to the new type and adds an upgrade to the bottom of the queue for any buildings that were previously finished. Soil/habitat improvements get added to the bottom of the list. Since "new" upgrades are always added to the bottom of the list, you should see them queued up in order of discovery, unless they were already in queue as an older building type.

hmmm, I hadn't noticed this.... I was also wondering what the deal with this was as I'm experiencing inconsistent "automatic" upgrading... 90% of my games, the planets automatically upgraded ALL tiles that 'could' be upgraded (i.e. research centers/farms/factories), but on my current game, I've noticed that planets I've won through 'the other race submitting to me' aren't doing the automatic upgrade...

I'm on a large, so it kinda screwed me up (50+ turns later) noticing, "oh sh**", those planets I 'won' half a hundred turns ago are still on old school research centers....

I'm sure I'm missing something simple here....



This is one of the coolest games I've ever played.

I usually have surrenders turned off, so maybe acquiring planets through this means doesn't trigger the upgrade mechanic?

Perhaps upgrading to the latest version may clear up inconsistencies you're seeing? It only takes a few minutes and you really lose nothing... There's no real reason not to upgrade your gold install. I upgraded mine the moment I registered and haven't had a lick of trouble.

Grab the new height maps while you're at it. (If'n I'm not mistaken, the 1.7 beta is where you get the gigantic maps, too...)

on my current game, I've noticed that planets I've won through 'the other race submitting to me' aren't doing the automatic upgrade...


it takes a turn before the upgrades are queued, so you won't see anything the turn you get the new planet. the upgrade governor will do it next turn, but it isn't always very smart when you have numerous new buildings available, so sometimes micromanaging your newly "aquired" worlds is better.

This is my biggest gripe about the game--which I like anyway.
I realize that you can turn this off per planet in DA (though I don't remember
how).

I think when you get a new tech from conquering a planet, you should be asked whether you want to upgrade at all (for all planets). If I want to upgrade planets later, fine.

There are times when I have to go through all the planets and delete factory upgrades that would bankrupt me. If I have enough me or income, then the factory upgrades are
fine.

Yeah this last game I researched the final factory type (industrial sector i think its called) and it almost bent me over the bank and cornholed me, but I won before it really screwed me over. Bit of advice...NEVER RESEARCH INDUSTRIAL SECTOR lol. You get 20% more production (12, instead of 10 of manufacturing center), and pay 5 bc per turn maintenance, instead of 3, so thats obviously a 60% increase in maintenance, for a 20% return in production. They also take eons to produce. That horse won't float...

The options to auto upgrade is by planet, on the governor section.

But yeah this is still a mystery, though It may be planets that have defected via influence who don't do it. Not 100% sure which ones weren't upgrading, but that may be the source: Planets that were not mine to begin with.

I hate it after a race surrenders to me. But only because there does not appear to be any mechanism for highlighting newly aquired planets from surrenders so then of course i cannot find them all and fix the upgrading.

(Oh but that is playing Terran in DL, who have invisible coloured planets on the minimap)

I like it too, the name came to me inspired by the portrait i picked, which when i first clicked to it, I cracked up. It's the freaky lookin blue guy with the crazy eyes. It's the portrait right before the squirrel.

He truly inspired the culture of The Rediculoids.

That's not really a good idea. The updates contain alot of bug fixes as well as additional features, so you'll be playing a somewhat buggy game by not getting them. And some of the new features the updates contain are rather nice to have.

Click on the Details button in the planet screen then look for the Governor button. You'll then see options for upgrading buildings as well as terrain. I usually turn terrain upgrading off since I'd rather wait until any buildings have been completed before the game terraforms half a dozen tiles in a row.
