Ok, I have spent the entire day trying to get Gal Civ 2: DA to work having downloaded it to my computer via Stardock. Originally I considered the problem to be on the part of Stardock, perhaps sending me a faulty serial number or maybe their verification servers were down or something.
What I was getting was an error message whenever I tried to activate the game in the course of trying to run DA. So what would happen is that I would open Gal Civ 2 up so the menu would show (i.e. play game, update serial, manual etc...), switch over to the DA chapter and click play (or whatever it said exactly), thus making the activation screen pop up. This is the error I recieved on a numerous basis:
"Application start: 2007-6-24 18.14.47

Test internet data - success
Mode 1, short info

Error activating the product
Please check the serial number that you have entered and ensure that it is associated with the email you used. Try to activate the product again. If you are using Stardock Central you can right-click on the product and attempt to activate without reinstalling. Please include this log file when contacting support@stardock.com."
OK, now if anybody else has had the same message come up, this may be the answer to your problem. The whole key to authentication is that little sig.bin file (for whatever reason, i'm not a techie) I figured from various FAQs, feedback from when I tried to validate via e-mail (didn't work either). It seemed that maybe the problem might of been that something on my end was stopping the sig.bin file from being written.
And my guess was right, I checked my folder options and found that my GalCiv folder had been configured in my options to be 'read only'. This is what was stopping the sig.bin file from being written.
So for any peeps who maybe have experianced a similar error, try unticking the option in the folder properties that says 'read-only'.
Anyway if this is just common knowledge and i've just been stupid then there's no need for this post but on the chance that I might help a few people who've had similar problems, i've posted this here and on the Gal Civ website. Ta-ta!
