Is Tech Victory meaningful

Hi,

Am a newbie who has just finished a game (medium, normal). I went for Tech victory but its quite a grind. I could have actually pretty much wiped out everyone else much earlier but decided to go for Tech.

So my question for experienced players is this. Does it happen that you are in a position to complete Tech vistory and not be in a position much earlier to claim one of the other (usually Conquest) victories? In other words is Tech vistory always a grind?

Actually, the general tenor of posts to this forum is that at challenging and above, the Tech victory is the easiest, or at least the potentially shortest, course for most games. Many people say they turn off TV for that reason (unnecessary really, since you have to choose to research those last five ascension techs.)

Personally, I like to try to finish with a Tech Victory AND a fully researched Tech Tree, with research set on very slow. About 40% of the time, I either get beaten, or the needs of survival to REACH full development / Tech Victory force an influence or diplomatic victory before I can reach TV. (Some times the darned Korath just won't lay off unless you spank them...repeatedly.)

Oh, and try the above with everything set to Rare. A very different game to Abundant, or even common.

I like it myself, in games you are dominating it gives you an easy way to seal the deal without the monotony of grinding the game out for hours when you've clearly won anyway. In games you're losing it gives you a chance at clutching victory from the jaws of defeat - I remember stealing a tech victory once with 3 planets left, still one of the most exciting games I've ever played.

I always leave TV on.

It really depends on the galaxy size and the research speed that you select. If you play on gigantic galaxies with very fast tech it's possible to complete a tech victory before the colony rush is over. This is not particularly challenging.

If you play on tiny galaxies with very slow tech you could probably wipe out all opposition 10 times before you could complete a tech win, this is pretty tedious.

Somewhere between these two extremes I’m sure a tech victory is a reasonable thing to go for, being neither too easy nor require complete elimination of all opponents. I’m just not sure where this “sweet spot” of tech victories lies, since I personally just want to kill everyone anyway.

Yes! I have to turn this off or someone will get it too soon playing on very fast research.

The fastest I ever got the tech win was 26 turns on suicidal in DA. Has anyone else gotten the tech win faster?

When you've forgotten to turn it off, it can be a real kick in the nads. Imagine you're in the middle of a great game, really enjoying it and just starting to get your revenge on the Drengin, when you get the notification that the big empire on the other side of the galaxy has just researched the next-to-last tech for tech victory. That's it. Game over, there's no way you can win.

Unless you intend to go for tech victory from the get-go, you really do need to turn it off.

The first time I got at Tec victory, I thought it was because I had researched *everything* on the tech tree; because I had researched everything else and then the only thing left was the tech vic, I did wonder why (and posted here asking why) when I researched all the yelows and it said I had a victory for doing all of them and then I didn't win and then went on to do absoutly *every* one on the tech tree and the tec vic was the last one, and I must add my *first* victory;o)
Oh btw, I have a question if you don't mind? In DA after finishing a game it has a rating for your empire and mine reciently said "99", so my question is , is that in the entire metaverse or only at that size/dificualty?

Sorry not DA; but DL, lol I have DA; but I just don't like the spy part; because I have had a lot of victorys stolen by spys, lol and I am still a noob to DL, and I only bought DA to see what it was and although I like the graphics and such much better, I sure wish there was a way to revert the spys back to the way they are handled in DL

I usually do not go for tech victory, but there is another reason you might want to leave it turned on: It gives the AI another path to victory, making the game that much more interesting for you. One time I was minding my own business conquering the galaxy, when suddenly the message comes up that one of the empires I had not yet gotten to was working on the tech victory. I had to quickly make peace in my current wars and go after that empire, trying especially to conquer his planets that had high tech, so I could slow him down. I managed to get him, but it was a close one. It made for a fun game.

I tend to view alliance and tech victories as "cop out" victories, in that they're pretty easy to get even if you're not remotely the dominating power in the galaxy. I tend to turn them off, as a result.

Never playing on fast tech I've never had this problem. However it would be good if tech victory still took a long time even on fast tech, i.e. didn't scale with tech setting.

Tech Victory is meaningful, as in you can win the game with it, but it surely takes a while.

Sometimes you just want to win quick with Korath and their Sporeships. Different tastes for different people.

I just got a TV in a game in which one of my last planets (and the one with the biggest research bonus) was sitting right in the middle of enemy territory, being protected by some godly pirate ships that spawned due to a mega-event. So yeah, I'd say TV can definitely be meaningful, lol.

I was forced into a tech win in my last game. The huge Galacatic War between many side messed up my eco (I was Korx) and most of my trade disappeared. Had to recovered, researched everything on the tree until discovery spheres was my last tech left. The following war with the Arceans messed things up even more so the only thiong left for me was a TV (Military too weak for conquest, Influence and Diplomacy impossible during a war I couldn't end, and the Terrans were just heading for TV just before I reached Beyond Mortality). Pouring everything into research I won by a few weeks, with the Arceans constantly battering my planets...This was on a Huge map Normal difficulty and DL.
